This Blog is for real Bronco Fans to chat about our favorite team and discuss all things Bronco (This blog was created by Dhag, but Broncobrad kicked him to the curb and has taken it over)Dhag still administrators power on this blog and can kick back!!!
Started playing around with ideas for the offseason. First started with my favourite position ILB. There are rumours we would like an upgrade on Davis and that doesn't surprise me. He has been great on 1st and 2nd down but becomes a liability covering RBs. Plus I think he and Alexander are too similar with AJ being the better player.
So the two top draft prospects are Isiah Simmons and Kenneth Murray. Both are prototypical size and bigger than Bush or White were last year. From the little tape I've watched Simmons played more outside than in and doesn't do a lot of the things I like about LB play. Murray on the other hand does, he is a pure ILB. I like Murray a lot but I would need to watch more games from both first. Both should be there around the 15th pick with Simmons maybe getting closer to the 10th in projections at the moment.
If we go the FA route, there has been talk about Joe Schobert, young and highly productive LB for the Browns. He has established himself as one of the best LBs in football. The other idea floating around is bringing back Trevathan. He just finished up another injury shortened campaign and would come much more cheaply. I’m not opposed to this idea, we could use Davis for 1st and 2nd down and rotate him out for Trevathan, thus limiting Trevathan’s snaps and hopefully getting him through a full year.
There are a lot of good FA available this year and looking at FAs lead me to looking at CBs and OT. CBs are a bit light on with Logan Ryan being the clear standout. I would love to add him to the team, youngish at 28 and highly productive CB. Expect him to cost a lot and most likely stay with Tennessee. The other CBs are mostly names you have heard of or projects, Roby is high on that list.
Looking at OL we have multiple spots to look at and upgrade. LG and RT are sorted, Risner will be at LG and we aren’t going to pay another RT so hopefully James can get healthy. We need a RG and a Center (depending if we like McGovern enough or not). Could we do with an upgrade at LT? We have Bolles and I figure we will keep starting him (since he is available). But there is one dude I would be happy to throw all the money at. Anthony Castonzo is off contract and would be a huge pick up for us, maybe then slide Bolles to RG to protect him from speed rushers.
To continue musing, I've been looking at mock drafts. There are hundreds of them! Its still probably a little too early to get to excited abut the draft with new players still declaring, but, what else does a Broncos fan have to do right now?!
I am a little surprised that the consensus pick seems to be a wide receiver. With Chris Harris seemingly not wanting to come back and all the reasonable O line guys gone by 15, I expected CB to be the pick. Maybe by 15 the value of CBs still on the board is too low and WR is where the best available player is.
No use getting too excited about the draft until after the combine, I suppose.
I’ve been seeing that as well. I understand the thinking, if we going with lock get him some weapons. But I would like to think we would focus on the oline first. Protect him so he can make big plays, I also like Patrick and Hamilton.
I do agree with you, we need CB help plus DL on defense. Upgrading at ILB is nice to have.
Offense it’s OL and then get Lock some extra weapons.
Read somewhere that Shula is the odds on favorite for QB coach right now... but I haven't checked the latest news, for all I know we could have already hired someone.
I was rooting for hiring Kyle - I think I even said I'd give his dad another run over some of the other candidates, especially VJina. Still shaking my head over the 2 lost years of that ass.
Randy should be in the hall, the voters always look at his tackle numbers and don't believe them. He made just over 2000 in 10 years. That is an average of 200 a season. As a comparison Ray Lewis made similar tackle numbers in 17 seasons!

Sounds like he could fit into Fangio’s defense well. I think I’d rather see us go for Byron Jones though. If we don’t keep Harris, we’ll need them both!
Anyone watch some of the combine? Was pretty interesting.
For me it was good to not have to scout QBs for a change. Though we probably pick one late to compete with Rypien.
The three positions of interest for me are OL, WR and ILB. Lucky for us all three are pretty deep. I’m still tossing up what to do with our first round pick. WR is so deep that I think we can wait on them, either get one in the 2nd round or trade down and pick one.
I may be the small majority but I like the idea of getting a LT and moving Bolles into RG. Two birds one stone etc. Bolles biggest issue has been speed rushers which he won’t have to deal with at RG, plus he can focus on his power game which is good.
But the idea I’m liking the most is getting ILB Murray. Simmons will get all the hype but Murray we can stick at ILB for the next decade plus without issue. In this scenario we trade down a bit pick Murray and then work our way into the top of the 2nd for a WR maybe.
I’d like to keep Harris too but it seems he wants out and is on the decline. Though AJ is more a no 2 CB. We still going to need a main guy which could be Harris or maybe Slay. It’s a solid move for a 4th even though AJs contract is huge.
I think Harris is gone for sure. If they franchise Simmons, they will have over $50 million this year for the secondary - Simmons, Bouye, Jackson and Callahan. They can't/won't/shouldn't spend any more in this area. Hopefully Callahan plays this year.
Yeah this is what makes me think they will draft a corner and hope he develops. From all the talk on AJ is he is a top end No 2 CB but a solid No 1. I would hope we look at adding a CB1 but the cost isn't there.
Which also makes me think the draft will be offense heavy. Rumors are we going to buy a D and draft an offense. We shall see.
Per Ryan Ohalloran on Twitter -- #Broncos awarded three compensatory draft picks (round 5, round 7, round 7). Now have 11 picks (one of their 4s will go to #Jaguars for Bouye).
Yeah been solid enough nothing flashy. Good that they have been upgrades at each position too.
Also interesting Harris signed for 2 years 20 mil (10 year avg), turning down that 2 year 12-12.5 mil a year deal at mid season doesn't look like such a good decision now.
According to Klis, it was $8.5M/yr for 2 years but with incentives it could bump up to $19.5 total for the 2 years. Funny how the info changes depending on who provides it. Bottom line, Harris fucked himself by not taking JE's offer. That seems to happen a lot when player's heads swell up more than 2 helmet sizes...
Nothing flashy so far, but I think we are improving as a team. Get a couple of injury guys back and healthy and we're looking better. We still need a couple of home runs in the draft.
Like 1st says this is the riddick type signing (hopefully without the injury). A pass catching back which both Lindsay and freeman struggle at. Gordon’s a top 10 back when on, just got to get him firing.
Found it! It was in the Denver Post and i mis read it. Denver was 29th in punt COVERAGE. This article says he was 12th, so thank you! I feel much better now!
According to a league source, Martin’s deal is for three years and $7.05 million. The average salary of $2.35 million is 15th in the NFL among punters.
In 2019, Martin’s net average of 41.8 yards was 12th among those with at least 45 attempts; Wadman’s 39.4-yard net average was tied for 27th.
The Broncos ranked 29th in punt coverage last year.
that's my wish list, Gould. And in that order too. I know that's a bit high for an OT, but if one of the top two or three are available i think we need to jump. draft seems pretty loaded at wide receiver, so we should be able to grab a much better than average receiver in the second round. I'd like to see us go volume in CBs and LBs with our later picks. We need some depth at both.
I also wouldn't care if we traded some of the later picks to move up a few times.
I haven’t done enough is the best answer, but from the top guys. I’m not a huge fan of Simmons, he does a lot of things well but doesn’t show out for me enough in one area. I’m all in on Murray, I think he is a perfect fit for us at ILB. I’m not huge on Queen but I’ll say every time I scouted White last year I thought Phillips out played him, so I like Phillips in later rounds.
Pats are out of the post season, that is a good first step :P
ReplyDeleteAnd Brady is a free agent. Hopefully that puts an end to The Pats run. Only thing that could be better is if Bellicheat stepped down or was fired.
ReplyDeleteBrees, Rivers and Eli also off contract. Add to that Dalton, Stafford, Flacco and maybe Newton. Changing of the guard in the NFL.
DeleteStarted playing around with ideas for the offseason. First started with my favourite position ILB. There are rumours we would like an upgrade on Davis and that doesn't surprise me. Wow!! Scangarello fired today!! Our offense sucked, but I didn’t expect that. Doesn’t upset me, but it seems we just got him trained, lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah odd move, he wasn't perfect but there were some games he just got it right. So interesting to see him moved since he was still learning.
DeleteI wonder who will replace him?
All reports saying it will be Shurmur.
DeleteGuess we aren't gonna let any grass grow between our toes to start the 2020 season. Starting with a bang, I like it..
ReplyDeleteHaven't looked at mocks but the Hawkeyes have a good DL guy.
ReplyDeleteEspinoza
DeleteI see Antonio Gates announces his retirement today. That is a positive development for the Broncos!
ReplyDeleteI see the offensive coaching staff purge is continuing. We’ll be looking for a new QB coach. Wonder if Shurmer wanted to bring someone with him?
ReplyDeleteI'd say this was also because he was Scang's guy. Be interesting to see who they bring in.
DeleteRead somewhere that Shula is the odds on favorite for QB coach right now... but I haven't checked the latest news, for all I know we could have already hired someone.
DeleteChiefs are in the SB.

Boo. Go 9ers.
DeleteNiners D against Chiefs O.
DeleteIt will be a good game.
I'm also backing the Broncos West...I mean niners.
Yep 49ers have a lot of what we all wanted the Broncos to do. OBF was right we needed to can Elway and hire Lynch.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't exactly go that far, Lynch is mirroring what Elway did in his first three years.
DeleteI think its more we should have hired Kyle but that is on Ellis. He killed that off, instead we got Vance.
Haha. OBF didn't exactly say that either. He is all over Elway though. Lol
DeleteI was rooting for hiring Kyle - I think I even said I'd give his dad another run over some of the other candidates, especially VJina. Still shaking my head over the 2 lost years of that ass.
DeleteSame, we all wanted Kyle.
Deletehttps://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/01/23/broncos-interviewing-mike-shula/
ReplyDeleteThat was the plan and officially we hired him today.
DeleteLet’s hope Lock and him work well together!
ReplyDeleteDigger, ha. I will give credit to Elway for the draft picks the last 2 years. Too bad he muffed the Free Agents.
ReplyDeleteHere’s hoping for a few home runs in this years draft too!!
DeleteAtwater made the hall of fame!! About damn time!
ReplyDeleteThe Smilin Assassin! Probably a great big smile now.
100%! So happy for him.
DeleteSo great, now the next injustice is Randy Gradishar.
DeleteWithout a doubt.
DeleteGradishar doesn't have the hit heard around the world going for him. He probably can get in soon on that old guy clause thingy. Haha.
ReplyDeleteRandy should be in the hall, the voters always look at his tackle numbers and don't believe them. He made just over 2000 in 10 years. That is an average of 200 a season. As a comparison Ray Lewis made similar tackle numbers in 17 seasons!
DeleteSure am glad we never traded for Garoppolo... feel bad for Kyle, bet they get a new QB soon.
ReplyDeleteTheir defense fell apart as well. Up 20-10 they shouldn't lose from there.

DeleteInteresting little article
ReplyDeletehttps://1043thefan.com/2086145/byron-jones-will-likely-be-the-broncos-top-target-in-free-agency/
It would be oh so awesome if we could find a way to keep Harris and add Jones.
ReplyDeleteSee the report we were looking at Slay and could be again? That would be a big pick up, but for two firsts, that is a lot to give up.
ReplyDeleteSounds like he could fit into Fangio’s defense well. I think I’d rather see us go for Byron Jones though. If we don’t keep Harris, we’ll need them both!
ReplyDeleteKeeping Harris and drafting a CB sounds like the right thing to do at CB to me.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind getting Gladney at #15.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind having Chris back but I don't think he wants to come back. Plus he has to play slot, he is average on the outside.
ReplyDeleteThere are rumours floating we will look at Prince as well since he just got cut by the Bears.
Anyone watch some of the combine? Was pretty interesting.

Good plan G. Will there be a team wanting #15 though?
ReplyDeleteI’d say so, either for QBs or for guys that fall because the QBs shift guys down. There will be a market.
DeleteLooks like Daniel J stealing my ideas.

Per Adam Schefter
ReplyDeleteThe Broncos and Jaguars have agreed on a trade that would send cornerback A.J. Bouye to Denver for a 2020 fourth-round pick, league sources tell ESPN.
Personally I would have rather kept Harris.
DeleteI’d like to keep Harris too but it seems he wants out and is on the decline. Though AJ is more a no 2 CB. We still going to need a main guy which could be Harris or maybe Slay. It’s a solid move for a 4th even though AJs contract is huge.
DeleteThe contract doesn’t look horrible though, it sounds like a lot of the money was paid upfront so we’re “only” on the hook for 13 mil.
DeleteIt would be oh so awesome if they would still sign Harris! Don’t see it happening though.
Slightly more than what we offered Harris but also two years younger. It is a solid move that also doesn't affect our comp picks.
DeleteI think Harris is gone for sure. If they franchise Simmons, they will have over $50 million this year for the secondary - Simmons, Bouye, Jackson and Callahan. They can't/won't/shouldn't spend any more in this area. Hopefully Callahan plays this year.

I like it. Now draft a CB at #15.
ReplyDeleteNo I didn't! Now I know its Spam!
ReplyDeleteI do. My name means, "Beloved".
ReplyDeletePer Ryan Ohalloran on Twitter -- #Broncos awarded three compensatory draft picks (round 5, round 7, round 7). Now have 11 picks (one of their 4s will go to #Jaguars for Bouye).
ReplyDeleteHopefully we can move some of those lower drafts to move up a couple of times and get some better quality out of this draft.
ReplyDeleteWe got Glasgow
ReplyDeleteA Guard. Must be keeping Bolles at LT.
ReplyDeleteI think they are going to play him at C, so no McGovern but I also like the idea of keeping McGovern and playing him at RG.
DeleteIf we replacing OT like bolles that would be through the draft.
I’m glad we stayed out of the Diggs trade, Bills gave up heaps for him.
ReplyDeleteMcGovern signed with the jets on a cheap deal.
ReplyDeleteWe also traded jano for a 7th, can’t say I’m happy about that.
Brady to the Bucs being the big news.
ReplyDeleteGot a backup QB in Jeff Driskel
ReplyDeleteLost a CB, got a CB. Lost an OG/C, got one. Got a DT, all ours are FAs. Nothing fancy.
ReplyDeleteYeah been solid enough nothing flashy. Good that they have been upgrades at each position too.
DeleteAlso interesting Harris signed for 2 years 20 mil (10 year avg), turning down that 2 year 12-12.5 mil a year deal at mid season doesn't look like such a good decision now.
Actually was 3 yr/36 mil (12 average).

ReplyDeleteNot sure how I feel about the addition of Gordon. A talent for sure, but also a bit of a head case. Seems a bit pricey too!
ReplyDeleteYeah interesting move, he is a workhorse, think he is here to take royces spot. Money isn’t too bad but gurley only got 5 mil.
DeleteI've got this Theo Riddick deja vu feeling about the Gordon signing... but I'm a poor judge of NFL livestock.
DeleteVery interesting. Jano gone, but Freeman still here. IDK why Gordon.
ReplyDeleteLike 1st says this is the riddick type signing (hopefully without the injury). A pass catching back which both Lindsay and freeman struggle at. Gordon’s a top 10 back when on, just got to get him firing.
DeleteI see picked up someone labeled as a tight end. Looks like tackling a dummy for when camp opens...
ReplyDeleteYep, was with the Steelers, had 600 yards in 4 years.
DeleteWe got a punter!
ReplyDeleteMoving from the 29th ranked punter to the 27th ranked punter is progress, I guess.
ReplyDeleteHead where did you get the 27th tank from? Everything I’ve seen is he is middle of the pack in that 15ish range.
DeleteIt was from a news report abut the signing, don't recall which one and cant find it now.
ReplyDeleteProbably depends on what stat they picked to rate them by for the article the reporter is writing.
Found it! It was in the Denver Post and i mis read it. Denver was 29th in punt COVERAGE. This article says he was 12th, so thank you! I feel much better now!

The Broncos ranked 29th in punt coverage last year.
Yeah I think we signed him for good money for what he is ranked.
DeleteGot Harris back on a real cheap deal.
ReplyDeleteWolf signs with the Ravens. I’ll miss him. He has been a very solid performer for a lot of years.
ReplyDeleteHope everyone is being smart and staying safe. At least the draft is still scheduled.
ReplyDeleteI'm an old fart too, OBF, and we have my 90 yr old father in law living with us. So we're keeping a real low profile.
ReplyDeleteI may actually watch the ENTIRE draft this year, just to keep my mind on something!
Might as well watch the entire draft, nothing else to watch.
DeleteGlad you are being safe, it's like being on house arrest (or grounded) without having done something fun to earn it.
I'm alive. IDK how safe I am.
DeleteI'm hoping all you US lads stay safe and are healthy.
DeleteDraft is going to happen. What are your hopes?
ReplyDeleteGoing to be really different this year being all digital.
DeleteI’m hoping for OT, WR, CB and ILB.
that's my wish list, Gould. And in that order too. I know that's a bit high for an OT, but if one of the top two or three are available i think we need to jump. draft seems pretty loaded at wide receiver, so we should be able to grab a much better than average receiver in the second round. I'm always wanting a 1st round CB. I'll go with that again. Another CJ would work. Trading up to get the Iowa OL Werts or whatever would be okay too.
ReplyDeleteAll the mocks have WR in 1st. Some have us trading up to get one.
ReplyDeleteGould
ReplyDeleteWhat does your LB scouting tell you? Who do you like?
I haven’t done enough is the best answer, but from the top guys. I’m not a huge fan of Simmons, he does a lot of things well but doesn’t show out for me enough in one area. I’m all in on Murray, I think he is a perfect fit for us at ILB. I’m not huge on Queen but I’ll say every time I scouted White last year I thought Phillips out played him, so I like Phillips in later rounds.
DeleteFrom what I'm reading I think it could be a trade down to take WR Mims.
ReplyDeleteVon got corona :(
ReplyDeleteYep read both those today.
ReplyDeleteAlso 50:1 longshot SB winner.
$100 on them and they pull it off, wow, $5000
I'll save my $100, thank you! Broncos would have to get the top three picks in this year's draft for me to even consider making that bet.
ReplyDeleteI think we'll be improved over last year, but Lock is still pretty much a rookie QB.
Haha. Me too. I don't have $100 to throw around right now. It's all invested in toilet paper. Haha.
ReplyDeleteYou need to diversify! Buy some hand sanitizer stock too!
ReplyDelete🤣🤣
I don't believe in sanctification. 😎
ReplyDeleteHappy draft week everyone! Super pumped to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteGronkowski to Tampa. That team is looking more and more scary by the day.
ReplyDeleteHaha. Wow. Gronk is back.
ReplyDeleteHey Jazzy
ReplyDelete#1 WR falls to us. That's what happens. Love it. He'll replace Sanders!
ReplyDelete
