Ok April eon’t officially be here until tomorrow, but it means we are closing in on draft day. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing if we can build on last year’s draft class. I have reviwed quite a few mock drafts, none of which I have really liked. Most have us taking Lock. Still not sure how I feel about that. The one I saw most recently had us taking him and his #1 WR Emanuel Hall in round 5. Not a bad idea, but not sure how I feel about it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I watch Lock's game type Hall is always coming up big. He has issues with drops but he is exactly what we are looking for, a deep threat burner.
DeleteIn the mock I've been thinking of I've been picking him in the 4th.
What do you guys think about taking C Erik McCoy from Texas A&M with our second round pick?
ReplyDeleteHe is projected as the 46th best player available so it wouldn’t be a reach for us.
I'm torn on picking a center early. I'm thinking if we are going to play Connor at center and we have Sam Jones as a backup maybe we pick up a late round center (5th or 6th) that we can develop like Paradis.
DeleteBut I want to improve our Oline. Think guards are our biggest weakness (Leary will be gone next year). I don't mind the idea of taking Risner in the 2nd (if still there) and play him at RG.
Our 2nd round O-linemen picks haven't been real good outside Orlando Franklin though.
LOL!, I saw a mcok yesterday that had us taking a C a #10... with Lock, Haskins and Jones still on the board! I think these mocks don't get serious until the final day or two before the draft.
DeleteOTA's for the Broncos begin on Tuesday the 2nd.
DeleteSo many mocks now have Murray as the #1 pick. I have been pleading for him for months. Not going to happen now. Although even if he was there at 10, I'm not sure Elway is bright enough to take him.
ReplyDeleteBroncos Re-Sign ERFAs DB Dymonte Thomas & OT Elijah Wilkinson
ReplyDeleteHopefully they will have a tough time making the team after the draft and training camp.
ReplyDeleteI really hope we are planning on jumping into the Rosen battle. Teams reportedly interested in him have been teams with older starters already(SD, NYG, NE). It has also been reported that they're not getting 1st round offers for him. Personally, I think NYG 2nd round pick will get him. What a bargain.
ReplyDeleteNYG have 12 picks. Pretty sure they'll be wheeling and dealing.
DeleteWhen the Cards first started talk of taking Murray and trading Rosen, a third round pick was thrown around. If they take Murray, they will have to unload Rosen. If I had to guess, teams interested will wait and see if they take Murray. If they do, their phone will be ringing off the hook. Despite having to unload him, they are in a great position because there seems to be enough interest where teams may have to give up a little more than a third rounder to get him.
DeleteNot sure I want him. There are obvious reasons the Cards are moving on from him other than the head coaches love for Murray.
He was meant to be the most pro ready QB with all the mechanics down pat. He didn't show any of that at the Cards and I don't think people like his personality. Seems like buyers remorse to me.
DeleteI'd avoid.
i agree. Red flags all over the place.
Deletegiants just need players. they may decide to use all their picks
DeleteI sure don't eant him to go to NE!
Deleteif he sucks I do haha

CJ Anderson signed with the Lions today. I am completely shocked the Rams let him walk. I am sure it was a money issue, but they don’t make the SB last year without him. He was more reliable and ran better than Gurley did.
ReplyDeleteTrumaine Brock signed with the Cards - VJina loves our castoffs but hates the Broncos which means going after Rosen might be a bit awkward for Elway.
DeleteCJ was behind one of the best olines. Also gurley was hurt, he is on a totally different playing field when healthy.
DeleteAnd it's been one of the best OLs in large part because of that LT we all wanted from Cincy a couple of years ago.
DeleteChris Harris playing a little hardball with the Broncos right now. Not reporting to “voluntary” workouts.
ReplyDeleteChris Harris signed a very team friendly contract with a home town discount when Manning was still here and the Broncos were Super Bowl contenders. Now that Manning is gone and the Broncos have failed miserably to replace Manning, the Broncos are clearly no longer Super Bowl contenders and I am guessing that Harris wants big time money or to play elsewhere.
DeleteWell, he will play for us this year if that's the case and leave next year. Might not be such a bad thing if that were to happen.
DeleteIf he continues his hold our into the season, he will not be playing for us this year.
DeleteI think it would be awful to lose him. He came out of nowhere as an UDFA, gave us a break on his 2nd contract, and has been one of the top CBs in football and he is professional and shows up every game.
At this point I think it is overblown. Broncos want to extend him but want to wait till after the draft.
DeleteHarris wants an extension and is trying to force the issue. Also probably doesn't want to show up to training in case he gets hurt.
Its the expected outcome. I'd be more concerned if he was skipping mandatory practices.
That Rodgers v McCarthy story is pretty interesting.
ReplyDeleteYes it is.
DeleteI see we signed a CB from the now defunct AAF. De'Vante Bausby. Some connection to Fangio in Chicago.
ReplyDeleteWe should have a poll on if we feel Ariz will draft Murray and trade Rosen or not.
ReplyDeleteThat would be fun. It might be more fun to set back and watch the show if they Draft Murray AND keep Rosen!
DeleteSeems the cards have two offers on the table for Rosen.
DeleteI saw one mock add Oakland trading up to number 1 to draft Murray
DeleteOkay well my vote goes to the Cardinals telling the truth that they will take Marie at number one and deal Rosen for as close to what they have invested as they can get for him.
ReplyDeleteMurray.
DeleteI was about to ask who this Marie was in the draft lol
DeleteShe had a little lamb. Lol
DeleteAhahaha.
DeleteLock and Haskin are both in town this week.

ReplyDeleteBeen seeing reports on Raiders interest in Murray. Just what we need; Murray, Mahommes and Rivers in our division and we have Elway's flunkie of the year.

ReplyDeleteI came across this from ProFootballFocus (PFF) on their 2019 QB draft rankings. Brett Rypien (where have I heard that name before?) was ranked #7 but get this, his QB grade by PFF was 89.1, above Haskins 85.0 and Lock's 88.9, hmmm... If we decide not to take a top 3 QB at #10, I'd really like to see us take Rypien at some point where we aren't reaching for him... wherever that may be.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.profootballfocus.com/news/draft-top-10-quarterbacks-for-2019-nfl-draft
Everytime I look at a scouting report for Rypien, it questions his arm strength. So, he does not excite me. Here are some examples(Who knows if these are accurate or not):
ReplyDeletehttps://thedraftnetwork.com/player/brett-rypien

https://nflmocks.com/2019/01/22/2019-nfl-draft-brett-rypien-is-your-next-colt-mccoy/
Yep that seems to be his issue, people are unsure if he has a high enough ceiling, that is why he is going in the mid rounds as a backup level QB. I do like his accuracy though.
DeleteI agree, I've also read that Rypien's "lack of arm strength" but oddly, I've read just the opposite about as many times in other evaluations... especially raves about his quick release and placement. It's funny, even in the reviews you offered, they often contradict each other, some contradict themselves in the same review. Also funny is a lot of them list a litany of positives about Brett. What they do all seem to agree on is his intangibles, ability to make reads and easily go through progressions. Like all QBs in every draft, they get varied pros and cons on evaluations - this class is no different. As for "arm strength", that's not as big a deal for me as it is for you. I'm more into accuracy, timing, ball placement and a quick, smooth release with little or no wasted motion. Smarts are my biggest concern and with it, the ability to process information quickly and accurately on the field, not just the classroom. I've seen many QBs with huge arms look stupid once in a NFL game. We just got rid of 2 of those in Lynch and BO, they both had outstanding arm strenth. Then there's JaMarcus, Winston, Flacco (oops, did I say that?) and a ton of others with big arms and little else. On the flip side, QBs like Brady, Montana, Luck and even Rodgers' arms ware questioned when drafted - (dare I throw PFM in there)? So, many of the past and present greats have questionable to weak arm strength and although I personally don't believe that is the case with Rypien (he can make every NFL throw), but even if it is suspect IMO there are other traits that can more than compensate for questionable arm strength. Besides, I'm not saying Rypien is a sure franchise QB that we should use our #1 or #2 on, but he has, IMO shown more than enough to be well worth taken lower - there may be a chance we find another Wilson (4th rd), Farve and Brees (both bottom of 2nd rd) and of course Mark Rypien (6th rd) among many others, including Young, Unitas and Starr! Frankly, I put about as much faith in scouting reports as I do mock drafts. In reality, I doubt we draft Rypien but he is someone I will watch and if he turns out to be a gem, I'll rub it in with salt and vinegar. If he's a dud or not given an opportunity, I'll just reply that I've never heard of him...
DeleteAll lower tier QBs in the draft have some weaknesses on the scouting reports. The Broncos need to take a QB somewhere in the draft. So if it is Rypien in a later round, that's fine. I will hope any QB the Broncos select will develop into a star.
DeleteB1st, I do have to correct you on your statement that Favre and Brees were both drafted in the bottom of the 2nd round. Brees was actually the 1st pick of the 2nd round (lol), and Favre was the 6th pick of the 2nd round (in a year that there was only 27 picks in the first round. So Brees went 32nd overall in 2001 and Favre went 33rd overall in 1991.
Thanks for the correction, I got my info from an article that evidently got it wrong. I checked again and you are correct, they were both 2nd round picks but not at the bottom of the 2nd. My point is still valid that they weren't 1st rd picks and that all teams passed on them in the first rd. A correction for you, the QB weaknesses aren't limited to "lower tier QBs" - I don't remember ever reading a scouting report where there were zero cons/weaknesses on their scouting report, they all have some, none are perfect, even 1st overall picks.
DeleteNot really a correction since I did not say that "only" lower tier QBs have weaknesses nor did I say that upper tier QBs do not have weaknesses.
DeleteOkay, point taken
Delete.
B1st, did you see this
ReplyDeletehttps://www.milehighreport.com/2019/4/11/18303431/nfl-draft-profile-brett-rypien
I saw some of that aricle quoted in another report, but I just read the full now. It's what I have been saying, a lot of things to like about Brett but the knock is his arm and size. Accuracy isn't the problem with his arm nor his release, mechanics, footwork, motion, reads, progressions, decision making and timing all get above average to high marks, it's just his distance and velocity are average to slightly above average, however I have seen him make all kinds of long bucket drops in stride as well as bullets on short/intermediate passes on video - so that ability is there, but may need more work. As for size, I just have to laugh considering the this year's likely #1 pick size. At 6'2" 203/210 (weight reports vary) Rypien is comparable to Elway when he was drafted. I just think he'd make a great #2 under Flacco or even the potential as #1 once he is groomed... he does come from a pro-style system, so he does work from under center and gun. That's another point, he has shown marked improvement year over year for the 4 years he started at Boise St. which means he has lots of experience starting, he adapts and is malleable, very keen to improvement. I've seen a few reports having him go to the Pats, comparing him to Garoppolo. But like I said, he may be a lower rd gem but in all likelihood, JE will pass on him unless he sees Flacco as a long term QB, then JE may go for Rypien as a groomer. If we take a QB at #10, I really doubt we take another in a lower rd.
ReplyDeleteI like this post. Real. Acknowledgement that if we take a higher up quarterback we probably will not take Rypien
DeleteOBF - Found this (from Ian Rapoport) on Rypien's arm strength;

This is cool. Got QB ball speed numbers at the Combine. WV’s Will Grier had the strongest arm with a 59 score (tied w Boise's Brett Rypien). Other top QBs: MSU’s Nick Fitzgerald & NC State’s Ryan Finley at 57; BUF’s Tyree Jackson, Mizzou’s Drew Lock & Duke’s Daniel Jones at 54.
Proves nothing, just interesting and as I said before, scouting reports by media and pundits are suspect at best as most go by what the other guy (or "insider") is saying and rarely relies on watching from the field or booth, lengthy film reviews or more likely, limited film reviews based on a couple of games at most.
Found this from NFL.com while checking out Will Grier - you can skip to the 1:50 mark to see what they say about Rypien, here's a hint, Broncos.

Dwayne Haskins wears an Elway Jersey to Broncos facility
ReplyDeleteSmart kid, lol! I've seen some recent reports suggesting that Haskins might not go in the first round. Evidently many feel Locke will go 1st or 2nd. If Murray and Locke are both gone at 10 would you take Haskins?
DeleteYes.
Deletehmmm, meh, hmmm
ReplyDeleteI would strongly consider Haskins at 10, but would want to see who else is still available at the time. If Devin White or Devin Bush were still there, Id have to give it some thought. Obviously our biggest need is a top level QB, but I don't see Haskins as a deadbolt lock, surefire, can't miss, NFL QB. Where either Devin sure looks to be all pro caliber linebackers, a need we also have.
ReplyDeleteI’m not a fan of either the devins, bush always looks lost, he is going one way and the play the other.
DeleteWhite is better but when you put the tape on he is consistently out played by Jacob Phillips who is standing next to him, I’d rather have that guy.
If Quinnion Williams were there that would be great.
DeleteThought I'd post our current 2019 draft picks for those who don't know;
ReplyDeleteCurrent Draft Picks:
Round 1: 10th-overall pick
Round 2: 41st-overall pick
Round 3: 71st-overall pick
Round 4: 125th-overall pick (from Houston)
Round 5: 148th-overall pick, 156th-overall pick (from Minnesota)
Round 6: 182nd-overall pick
Round 7: 237th-overall pick (from Houston)
I've watched more vids on Lock and I'm having doubts about taking him or Haskins at #10 if still available.
ReplyDeleteBPA is what I'm beginning to think and Rypien
Deletein rd 3-4 or wherever they believe they can get him.
That's pretty much where I am too. We have too many holes to fill to overdraft at any position. We need to hit several home runs in this draft to be respectable this year. Our #10 pick needs to be a grand slam! I'm not convinced there is a grand slam QB in this draft. I like Murray a lot (local kid) but i'd rather go BPA every pick this time. I'm sure we'll take a QB somewhere this year, but I really don't have any strong preferences after Murray. Haskins is too big a gamble for us and Locke isn't worth the #10 pick.
DeleteDT signed with the Pats... wish him well and the Pats the worst.

I always count home games as probable win, unless the opponent seems way out of our league. I don't see that here except maybe the Chiefs, so 7-8 wins at home. Away, I always hate going east and short weeks. I also believe in momentum of wins and losses after a huge win or loss. Like say a disappointing loss to KC at home on a short week could send us spiraling to a loss at Indy. The only east coast game is Buff. I love the schedule.
DeleteWith a week left to draft, who you got? I want to see some mocks!
ReplyDeleteMine would just end up same s*** different year. I came into this off-season thinking that I had a different perspective than usual. Turns out less than a week from the draft I'm thinking we're going to trade down if we can. We don't have comp picks. We only got our normal picks. In my viewpoint, #41 isn't quite High Enough to get guys were targeting. That means either we will probably trade down or number 10 to get one of those guys and gain a couple picks to add with our number 41 to try to trade up. I think our picks will end up being between 15 and 20 and then trade back up to the top of the second round.
DeleteDigger, here ya go, CBS just put out a mock that has Denver trading out of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th aaannd 7th rounds. They do have us taking Lock in the 1st and Isaiah Johnson (CB) in the 3rd.
Deletehttps://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/seven-round-2019-nfl-mock-draft-34-trades-and-full-breakdowns-for-all-32-teams-all-the-picks/
I actually agree with this and really liked it. Reisner was the one that I feel won't be there at 41 so we will need to trade up for him. This mock hits all the positions I feel we need. I hope for a higher nose tackle though.
DeleteSince there has to be a partner for a trade down and it's impossible to predict that,
ReplyDelete#10-Christian Wilkens DT Clemson
#41-Chauncey Gardner-Johnson S Florida
#71-Mack Wilson LB Alabama
#125-Ryan Finley QB North Carolina State
Oh interesting Digger. Where do you see Chauncey Gardner-Johnson playing? Safety or Corner, or it doesn't matter?
DeleteIn the rotation somewhere. Seems like the kind of guy we've been looking at. Smart. Good takler.
DeleteI'm thinking...
ReplyDelete#10-Ed Oliver DT or Drew Lock QB
#41-Dalton Risner OL or another inside O-linemen
#71-Emanuel Hall WR
#125-David Long Jr ILB
👍
DeleteDigger, regarding you comment above about liking the schedule, the concern that I have is that we have five 11:00 AM starts.
ReplyDeleteOh. Ouch. Hadn't noticed that.
DeleteStill, I really think 10-6 is very realistic.
Like most Bronco drafts, I have no clue as to who they will draft and like most drafts, they will likely not draft who I wanted leaving me scratching my head and hoping for the best. Usually I just add my support stating the brass must know better than I do, so I'll go early (pre-draft) and use this post as my reaction. Good luck Broncos, I hope you guys nail it this time but my confidence is tempered at best.
ReplyDeleteI hear that. I hope I can convince myself after the draft that they picked good.
DeleteLOL! Me too!
DeleteChiefs traded for frank clark and gave him big money.
ReplyDeletePer Adam Schefter -
ReplyDeleteBroncos’ Pro-Bowl slot CB Chris Harris has requested a new contract or a trade, per league source.
Seems fair since Harris is making $9M and our newly signed CB Kareem Jackson is making $11M Jackson's resume is not anywhere close to Harris' - I mean Jackson is good but CHJ has been a top 5 CB for most of his career.
Harris is asking for 15 mil a year and to be the highest paid corner though.
DeleteYa, I know CHJ wants $15M which JE has already said isn't going to happen, but JE & staff also must have known CHJ wouldn't be happy when they decided to pay Jackson more than him. IMO, if JE & staff want to keep CHJ and avoid a messy holdout, they will settle with Harris for around $12-13M and be done with it. Harris is one of our top 3-4 stars on the team which could make a difference on how the Broncos fare in 20019.
DeleteHarris is under contract, Elway could always do nothing and tag Harris if need be, there really isn’t any rush to do anything and probably where the frustration is, with Elway having to deal with this now.
DeleteI would say Harris is our 2nd best player and CB's are a premium position these days. I don't know why Elway made such inflammatory comments about Harris to the press yesterday. First he said he did not have time to address the Harris situation right now and then he said the he was not guaranteeing that they would redo Harris' contract. Thereafter, Harris said new contract or trade him.
ReplyDeleteSometimes Elway is stupid in press conferences. Sorry 1st, I know this will upset you.
Yeah the way he answered that question was totally out of character and maybe too real or honest. We will have to wait and see what happens now. I’d be disappointed to see Harris go.
DeleteOBF, It doesn't upset me as much as it gives you satisfaction. LOL!
DeleteThe "team" has now said they will listen to trade offers but they won't give him away for less than his value. Harris responded by backing a little off his pay me or trade me demand by saying he wants to retire a Broncos and he will leave the door open and if it closes, it will have to be the Broncos who close it. I'm for Harris getting paid above Jackson's contract but ya, his timing, just a day before the draft, stinks.
ReplyDeleteWe have the cap space next year to pay Harris, with Leary, sanders and Wolfe gone that’s 30 mil. We can definitely do an extension, but Harris seems to be in a hurry to get this sorted now for whatever reason.
DeleteCan we get a new post for draft day?
ReplyDeleteI put one up
ReplyDelete
