BRONCOS vs RAIDERS

The 2019 season begins on Monday... FINALLY!

  1. So it begins, new coaches, new QB, new players new season... is this Groundhog Day? Yup, it is familiar but will this year actually be different? Now's the time to make predictions for the season - let's start with the W-L record. I'm going to be my normal optimistic Homer and say we soar to 9-7 but only good for 3rd place in a power packed AFW West. Ya, ya, I know, I've been smoking Stink's old jock straps again, but what can I say - they're soooo addictive! So don't be shy, grab your favorite crystal balls (mine's Jake Butt, 100% leaded crystal) and make your Broncos predictions now - BTW, you can add more than just the record - if you really want to stick your neck out! My neck says the Broncos will have a surprise special teams and actually find the ability to cover kicks AND have a WOW return guy. LOL! Yep, just took another hit off my pipe!

  2. 9-7 also and agree the D and STs will carry the load. I predict a 2nd place in AFC West though.

  3. 12-4 if we are healthy all year but think 10-6 is doable.

  4. AB going to the Pats. What a crazy day.

  5. Hey guys. Hope everyone is doing well. Been going through a separation with my wife the past two months and haven't been dealing with it very well, so I'm sorry I haven't been on in awhile.

    2. Hey Brad. Sorry to hear that. Wish you the best through this change. Sometimes things end up better. Peace brother!

  6. Damn that sucks Brad, I'm hoping the best for you and your family.

Hopefully the Broncos can beat up the Raiders for you.

    1. Thanks Gould. It has been rough.

Looking forward to seeing what we have in this team this year. Hard to get excited about it though with everything else going on.

  7. well can't say I'm impressed with our defense so far.

  8. Well, we start by spotting them 7... our turn on offense. GO BRONCOS!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well not a great start. Defense coverage was too soft.

  10. Nothing like stumbling out of the gate... we're trying to lull them into a false sense of confidence... the strategy is BRILLIANT!

  11. We need to get Yadom out of there. He is getting toasted.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yiadom is playing good coverage but getting no help. Over muched against Waller.

  13. Better drive, better defense. Finally starting to wake up.

    ReplyDelete
  14. We are moving the ball now, hopefully the pass can open the run more for us.

  15. James down - wow, RT is a career ender in Denver...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not too thrilled with O or D so far... maybe they just need to get some good plays to build on.. a spark, like a bolt of lightening.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Damn, 14-0 Faders... so much for our D being dominant this year. To tell the truth, they look spazed out - constantly out of position, no pressure and half ass tackling... not a good combination.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We don't like playing in Oakland. Hopefully Vangio gives them a kick in the bum at half time.

    1. I agree with a swift kick... but go for the nuts, our guys need a big wakeup call.

  19. I don't want to overreact in week 1. especially just at halftime. I will just be succinct. That was a train wreck.

    1. Lost our last 3 in jokeland, we just can't get it together on the road here.

    2. ya, I don't think it has only been a problem in Oakland. Runs much deeper than that.

  20. 82 yds passing - 87total yds to 219 total for Oak... I'm in Florida and can smell the stink from here.

  21. Oh and Brad, sorry to hear about what you are going through. Hang in there.

    1. I thought the new rules allowed a penalty to be reviewed even if it wasn't called by a ref - if challenged?

  23. We got 3 and are knocking on the door again...our run game is picking up and we're getting some calls our way.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Second half the team is playing better. Starting to gel.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Fizz again but we get another 3 ...14-6 Oak.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Did Chubb and Miller suit up tonight? Carr has had all day all night.

  27. The more that I see this defense, I begin to see the difference in the Super Bowl winning defense of a few years ago and this years version. We don't have any nasty attitude players. Remember Malik Jackson, TJ Ward and Talib. They were nasty and brought a toughness to the defense. The current version has no such players.

  28. Yeah two FGs versus two Tds isn't great. Still in it but we need to score on the next drive.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Okay, I'm done posting, this isn't any fun.

  30. Came back late, but Gruden outplayed us with his offense. Second half was better but still a lot of work to be done.

Next week against the Bears will be tough.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well my internet and phone service went down for the final 4+ minutes but I see we did score again during that time... did we have a chance to score again or did we not get the ball back after getting to 24-16?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Never mind, I see from the play by play that Oak got the ball back with 2:15 remaining and got 2 1st downs... guess we couldn't stop them. Burning a TO early in the 2nd half probably didn't help us. We look pretty mediocre from what I saw... O was shitty, D was soft... we'd better get it together soon with our coaching, play calling and execution or we may have very little to cheer about in 2019 - except maybe a high draft position. Very disappointing that we find ourselves alone at the bottom of the AFCW after just 1 game. I'm gonna go kick the neighbor's dog now.

    1. We had our moments and chances, we didn't deserve to be in that game though.

  33. What I saw; Yiadom looked awful. Bryce Callahan is sorely needed but he's been a no show with injuries the entire camp and I'm beginning to think we got shafted on that trade. My hope is Bausby or one of the other CBs will be given a chance and be a functioning part of our below average secondary. Davis was missed at LB and we had few stops at the line or behind it... Raiders ran at will when they weren't playing catch and run on our CBs. Sadly, both Miller and Chubb were non-factors. Zero sacks, zero hits, zero pressure on the QB - Carr had all day, all night... but it's not just those two dim stars, Shelby, Gotsis, Wolfe, Walker, the whole D failed to live up to their billing. What can I say? - the tackling was horrible and our players looked out of position or simply beat when they were where they were supposed to be. Oak was like 10/14 on 3rd downs - were couldn't get off the field. I think Oak doubled our TOP in the 1st half. Starting the 2nd QTR down 14-0 and then settling for 3 FGs before finding the EZ with a little over 2 minutes left in the game is unacceptable. I'd like to be able to give some bright spots on D but they were few and not of any consequence when they did happen (mostly in the 2nd half but even then, just average at best. GRADE; D FOR D

On O, Flacco had decent numbers but he looks awkward in the pocket taking 3 sacks, taking way too much time to throw and erratic on critical plays. His ball placement was late, often behind targets or lacking touch. Did I say he looked awkward in the pocket? To his defense, our O-line is still bad. Losing James hurts but even with him, we held after getting beat (Leary) or were guilty of other penalties that killed momentum. We couldn't create running lanes for our RBs, the magic of our 2018 run game disappeared before our eyes. Not having Janovich hurts but our front line was soft, giving up yds or zero gain on every run it seemed. Play calling didn't help. I thought Scangarello would put some life in our play calling but he looked unimaginative and several calls were head scratchers and most were far too predictable. We simply could not dominate the line on pass or run. On the bright side. Sutton looked very much like what we hoped for - something like 120 yds on the night. Problem is, he will be targeted by defenses from here on out. Sanders had a quiet 1st half but came on strong in the 2nd half. Hamilton's dropped EZ TD was unforgivable, bounced off his chest. The drop didn't lose the game for us, but it was a notable factor... make no mistake, the loss was a team effort - including coaching. GRADE; C-

  34. Special teams... what special teams? We haven't changed at all there, one of the worst STs in the league for many, too many years. We can't cover kicks (gave up a 71 yd return that led to a score) and of course, we couldn't return a football if it still had the stickers, price tag, packaging and holes in the ball - even with a receipt and the day after Christmas! Sorry sir, we have a "no return" policy on defects and flaws such as yours... unless you are a Denver Broncos opponent, then feel free to take it to the house with our apologies! GRADE; F-

In summary we need a lot of fixing - a lot. Scangarello needs to do better, Munchak needs to do better, Fangio needs to do better and our players need to do waaaaaaay better. Too many mistakes, "death by inches" is still rampant in Denver and the injury bug, oh the injury bug has found a home it loves! Tim Patrick came away with his hand in a hard cast and may join our IR list. James was on crutches and tumbleweeds are still cluttering the RT position. Denver is becoming the ghost town of the AFCW, a place to vacation, rehab or retire for players and coaches while collecting fat disability checks.

I could list the bright spots, there were a few, but the dank fog that engulfs our team doesn't allow the bright spots to shine, they are just vague glows off in the distance. Sorry for being so negative but I just expected more with all the changes and talent we scabbed together for 2019... we we favored to win this game by 2.5 points and I thought we'd do that, maybe even more - but no, same old story that's just getting older.

  35. Some thoughts.

I don't think Yiadom did too bad. He had close tight coverage but was overmatched against the bigger receivers. What I don't get is why he didn't receive any help, I actually think Simmons had a bad game and we didn’t scheme well to put Simmons in good spots to support the others (same goes for Parks). This was adjusted a little in the second half.

I also don't believe we much up well against the Raiders. They are a big power team and we are a smaller finesse type team. Both our lines really struggled. Our run d improved in the second half with Purcell in at NT over Harris. Both Wolfe and Gotsis struggled too. Does remind me of last year where these guys had a slow start to the year. But with these two being taken care of easily it meant blocking Miller and Chubb was simpler. The Raiders did run a lot of two TE sets. With them getting just enough push, it gave Carr time and he was able to find the man coverage and throw a bunch of short throws, again not letting our rushers get to Carr. I reckon Gruden called a pretty good game against us, he was well prepared.

Josey had an really good game and is developing. I hope he can develop some of that nastiness that OBF mentioned.

    K. Jackson looks like a good pick up. I could be wrong but in the first half we played a lot more BASE defense with Corey Nelson in at ILB (who I thought started alright but faded) with Jackson on the sideline. Second half had more nickel meaning Jackson came into the game, a nice adjustment. None of our corners outside the type two got snaps. Bausby, Dawson and Harris were all on the sideline for much of the game since the Raiders played heavy.

On offense, Flacco is better than any of the other QBs we have had recently but there will be growing pains on this side of the ball. Our line is already hurt so I don't see them doing much better but they gave Flacco enough time to make plays. Problem is, to me it doesn't look like Sutton (consistently) and Hamilton can get good separation to get open with windows Flacco is comfortable throwing into. Flacco will have to take some more risks as the season goes on.

Offense play calling overall was ok. I didn't mind the play calling as much as the execution was bad. The Fant sweep to open the game was a good play call. But the right side firing out and not blocking the DE is poor execution. No way they trained that with Miller in that spot and him not blowing up that play the same way. One of them was meant to block the DE to give Fant the option of cutting it inside or out.

So overall some OK spots but a lot to learn. They have to be more cohesive and play together, maybe that can happen at home.

  36. So Elway brought in and paid 2 players with injury histories and now they ave both out with injuries. Thats $12 Million of cap space spent on risky investments, and right now the risk/reward is very negative. Plus we did not address ILB at all and we are paying dearly for it. I don't think Todd Davis is the answer either. Should have taken an ILB instead of Fant in 1st round.

    1. Jewell is not very good is pass coverage. He had a lot of tackles on Monday but most if not all were after 5 yard gains. Nothing at line of scrimmage.

I think our inside linebackers are amongst the worst in League.

    2. And have been.

Biggest disappointment to me as a Bronco fan the last 5-10 years, is all the things we as fans want, don't happen.

  37. All I can say is when all the hype about Miller wanting DPOY and he no shows with all that money invested in him, it hurts. We need big things from him. Didn't get it. We lose. No surprise to me. We need to get pressure. Our DBs besides Harris aren't that good. We NEED sacks and turnovers!

  38. We are going to see Khalil Mack on Sunday. If used to annoy me when people would compare Khalil Mack to Von Miller, because I thought Von Miller was such a better player. Now, as I watch, Khalil Mack makes contributions in every game. Von Miller does not.

  39. I'm trying to come up with positives from the Raider game. Courtland Sutton had a great game. I'm not a Joe Flacco fan, but I think he has the possibility of being better than any other quarterbacks has Peyton Manning. Garett Bolles did not have any holding penalties. That's about all I came up with.

    1. Yep. Thought about the Bolles thing. Huge accomplishment.

  40. Jewell is getting better, but I do agree. I miss Al Wilson.

  41. Shaq Barrett having a good game for Tampa, good for him.
