It's That Time, So Let's Talk Free Agency and The Draft...

195 comments:

  1. Well, let's begin with the basics. 1) what do you all think is the most important positions to address? I'll let you give 2 choices. 2) how should we fill those, FA or draft? 3) should we draft for need or best player available? 4) who do you think we should go after in FA or draft and why.

    1. I'll be the first since I'm B1st, ;)...
I think QB and OL are our most important positions to address. I like either Lock or Murray right now but if Haskins falls to us (don't think he will) I'd be happy with him as well. Of course I think we fill QB through the draft with our #10, avoiding a trade up if possible but not ruling it out. As for OL, IMO, LG is most important followed by RT. How we get them, I'm open to drafting or FA - whatever works out best at the time they are available and at what cost of course. MLB is also a need so again, whatever the best option is. As you can tell, I slightly favor going for need over BPA but if a very highly valued player falls to us (be cautious as to why), then go for him. We aren't loaded with picks or cap money this year so IMO, we really, REALLY need to find big time values in both the draft and FA this year. I won't get into specifics of who, other than the QBs I already mentioned, since there are so many variables that I simply don't have enough knowledge about the possibilities - but as things progress, I will start to find players and deals I like. Next!

  2. I would always draft the best player with the exception of if you really need a QB and really like a QB. So for me, I would do whatever it takes to get Kyler Murray. i doubt Elway will do this. So, then I would have to say CB or Tackle. With the 10th pick in this year's draft, that probably means CB. Then maybe Tackle in round 2. I want us to build via the draft and then fill in with FA. I would like to stop doing stop gaps with FA, that don't usually work out, and then we don't have enough cap space to sign our own FA's.

But did i say that I really want Murray?

    1. I think I vaguely remember you mentioning Murray... I like him too but I like Lock also - and Haskins. I hope we don't have to move up to get 1 of the 3, but if JE and staff feels really strongly about one of them, well, bite the bullet I guess and hope for the best.

  3. I was happy to see Murray's measurements weren't inflated as far as height went. His hand size was also bigger than I expected.

That video of him throwing the balls through the ho;e in the studio was impressive, but I would have been more impressed if the target was moving and so was he.

  5. Speaking of Murray all signs at the moment point to Cards taking him at one. Which will probably force the Giants and us to move up to get the QB we want (if we want qb). And with the fins and Washington also looking for qbs there could be a lot of movement in the top 10. Cards would be really fucking everyone if they took Murray.

    ReplyDelete

    1. But if they take Murray and flip Rosen to the giants then we get our shot at Haskins or lock...

  6. We have lots of needs. We're a long ways from being competitive with Kansas City. To me we have to get better at quarterback before that will ever happen. I'm not sure who that would be. Go to keep swinging for the fences. I am pretty sure Murray will end up being number one. He seems to have the it Factor. I don't think the Cardinals will be the one to draft him though. They can't change over from Rosen this soon. However after my record last year of saying Minnesota would keep Keenum and was blowing smoke about going after Cousins, I am not going to make any bold predictions. I guess that my hope is that we sell out on getting the next franchise and cross our fingers that he is the real deal. Murray? I don't know. I do know I'm not going to fall in love with any of them just to have the rug pulled out from under me again.

    1. Seems Washington and maybe the pats are keen on Rosen.

DK running 4.33 was great for us, he will go top 10.

  7. From what I have been watching I really like Isabella as a slot WR but we probably have that guy in DaeSean. The other wr I really like is Emmanuel hall, every game I’ve watched of Drew Lock, hall has shown up, is a deep threat burner with good size. I like him as a mid round pick.

  8. Wasn't mentioned but the Cap is now 188 mil.

  9. I see the Broncos met with 3 lower rated QBs at the combine, Grier, Rypien and Stidham. Broncos also said they will not meet with the "big four" (Haskins, Murray, Lock and Jones) during the combine but did not rule out meeting with them at another date and place. So, we may go in any direction at QB depending on who is available when our turn is up. It does look like we will be taking a QB at some point in this draft but who knows when or who.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Usually the high rated QBs are saved to come in for private team site visits leading up to the draft. So this is too be expected.

What seems to be interesting is reports floating around that the Cards have been telling teams Murray is no 1 and Rosen is for sale. FA next week is going to be interesting!

  11. Per Troy Renck on Twitter;

Multiple sources tell #Denver7 that talks between #Broncos and Chris Harris' side about contract extension went really well. Very productive. Harris' goal is to retire a Bronco. Is ideal fit in Fangio defense (or any defense). And will be Ring of Famer someday.

If he does, I hope it is as a 4th linebacker/special teams guy and at a lower contract. He's good at what he does, but I hope we can do better for a starting linebacker. Although I'm sure he would help with installing Fangio's defensive concepts.

    2. Yeah I was thinking back up outside linebacker.

  14. I'm disappointed we didn't tag our LS. Hopefully we can get him back.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think we can resign Kreiter... from what I read, the NFL minimum for tagging a player (around $2M) is actually higher than what the highest paid LS is paid ($1.75M) - so, we can sign him for less than $1.75M and likely will.

  15. Weddle was released by the Ravens today. I wonder if we try to bring him in.

    ReplyDelete
  16. With the Jags expected to sign Foles, I think we will have less competition for the QB’s. And it sounds like the Cards have put Rosen on the trade block, which I think that means they are going after Murray. If we want Murray, we would have to leapfrog them to get him. Maybe its a ploy, but if it is, it isn’t a smart one because you alienate your QB.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. nevermind. Cards are no 1 so we can’t leapfrog them. So the likelihood of getting Murray is slim to none if they want him.

    2. Digger, did you read the bad mouthing Casserly laid on Murray? Could be someone trying to knock him out of the #1 overall pick. At this time of the year you believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/03/05/taking-a-closer-look-at-charley-casserlys-report-regarding-kyler-murray/

    3. Could be true, Casserly is connected.

But I don't think the Cards care, and maybe Murray bombed the others knowing the Cards is where he wants to go.

  23. Right now, if Elway keeps Keenum and Flacco at their current contracts we be a nickle or two short of $40M of cap space for these 2 amazing QBs. Obviously, something will need to change here before we sign too many free agents. Not really a concern since Bowlen is no longer running the franchise and Elway has done his best to make Denver a not so desirable destination for free agents.

I've been wondering who Elway will sign next year ro play QB for $18M. The leading contenders are Bortles, Tannehill and Dalton.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Broncos Wire is saying Keenum, Wolfe, Leary and Davis are all likely to be cap casualties along with Stewart who's already gone. There is some speculation that Keenum may agree to cut his contract by a bunch in order to remain a Bronco but I doubt he'll remain as a backup QB... never can tell.

      Delete
    2. I thought Terrell Davis had already retired. Oh, you mean Todd.

      Delete
    3. Our problem for next year is that there a 50/50 chance we'll have a better record in 2019 - not good, just better, leaving us too far out of position to move up to draft a 2020 QB without selling our next decade of picks. We could be stuck in the bad to so-so zone for years like the Lions, Jets, Bills and Browns have been (Browns may finally move forward). That's why I'm thinking we draft for the best QB we can find this year.

My 2nd option is if AZ drafts Murray #1, and both Lock and Haskins are gone, we trade AZ our #10 for Rosen. We could of had Rosen last year but when Chubb fell to us, we had to go with him. If AZ goes for the trade (and 2 picks in the top 10 may get the deal done), then we wind up with Rosen and Chubb for our #1 picks in the last 2 drafts which IMO, would be a win for us.

  24. I thought they were going to keep Sanders and Wolfe.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sanders yes, we'll keep him, not certain about Wolfe. Sanders has been more durable and productive than Wolfe. As for money, Sanders is almost $2M more but their dead cap is nearly the same at about $2.5M. Sanders hasn't been signed a new contract yet but there have been talks about a restructure and although Sanders first said no way, rumors are that he's now listening. The injury favors Sanders as far as leverage for this year's salary... but we'll soon find out.

    2. Lots of reports today that they are keeping Wolfe.

Broncos have trade parameters with Washington for QB Case Keenum: Broncos get WAS 6th in 2020, WAS gets Broncos 7th in '20, per source. Keenum's contract reworked. Broncos pay him $500K restructure bonus and pay $3.5 million of his $7M salary. Washington pays $3.5 mi.

  30. There are a lot of local news stories here in North Texas about what is being called the hatchet job by Casserly on Murray. Former coaches and opponents and local football people who have known him saying nothing of what Casserly said is true.

That story just keeps getting stranger and stranger.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Belichick said Casserly is a 'know nothing' guy. Seems Casserly is pushing the agenda of a team hoping to make him fall (Raiders maybe). But it isn't going to happen.

      Delete
  31. Nobody commented on my idea to trade our #10 (or less if possible) for AZ's Josh Rosen - IF - AZ takes Murray at #1 and Lock and Haskins get taken by some of the other QB needy teams. We lose our #10 but if Rosen had waited for this year's draft, he could arguably be the #1 or #2 QB taken in this class. Anyone like it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. AZ is seeking a third rounder for Rosen at the moment. We would be overpaying with #10.

      Delete
    2. Are you sure? I've seen a few speculations that *IF* AZ drafted Murray, they MAY go as low as a 2nd or 3rd to unload Rosen - but again, it's speculation, that's why I added the *(or less if possible) qualifier to what we give up. If AZ is actively shopping Rosen for a 3rd rounder, I'd jump on that easily, like right now or sooner. I just don't believe a 3rd round pick is going to get Rosen away from AZ. They drafted Rosen at the #10 spot last year with only Darnold and Mayfield ahead of him. Earlier in 2018, the heads were saying Rosen was "the most NFL ready QB in 2018" so, ya, many were high on him. Also, AZ has paid Rosen the big signing money leaving only about $2M/yr left on his contract - meaning they could easily hang onto Rosen as insurance then get a big payday for him when some team's starter goes down. JE may have even taken Rosen if Chubb, who was expected to be long gone at #5 when we drafted hadn't fallen to us. So, again, if we can get Rosen with a 3rd round pick right now, I'd jump all over that, trade our #10 down to grab more capital and start filling other needs like CB, ILB, WR, LG, TE and whoever else falls to us that will help. Ya, I hope yer right but I just can't believe we'd be that lucky! Think about it, a talented 22 yr old QB who's smart, has the size and arm and feet, with a year under fire in the NFL experience, sitting behind Flacco fo a season or less... ya, I'm all for that - even if it costs us our #10 to get AZ to take the deal - but for a 3rd rounder - that's a no brainer IMO.

      Delete
    3. LOL! Gould, sorry, I was just itching to get someone to reply so I could unload all my pro-Rosen arguments... I really do like the idea though which is weird since last year I wasn't really liking Rosen at all and hoped we would NOT go for him at #5. But as blah as his stats were last year (Cards OL and O weapons stunk to begin with) Rosen came on stronger after firing Mike McCoy... and not shell shocked battle shy like what happened to Siemian after taking his 2016 beating/mugging/gang rape.

      Delete
    4. All good.

But Rosen was bad last year, has the wrong personality, his team is already moving on from him after one year, and we already passed on him once.

      I don’t see it.

      Delete
  32. Glad to see Kee gone and best of luck to him... I think that spells IN ALL CAPS that we will for sure draft a QB early - maybe even trade up if need be.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wouldn't mind if we got Rosen somehow

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, if AZ decides they can part with him, he may very well be the best QB available this year.

      Delete
  34. Well it's good to see some things happening. personally I'm having a lot better of an offseason by not getting as involved in at all.

Latest news is that Langley is moving to wide receiver. Elijah Wilkinson and Tim Patrick are signed. Wolfe got his bonus. Most important we managed a salary dump of Keenum.

I think that CB and OT still remain a very viable possibility at number 10 overall for us along with QB.

    ReplyDelete
  35. On the hope that we could get Rosen from Ariz thing, I think the reports that they are going to give him away for a 3rd rounder is ridiculous. What kind of idiot first-year coach coming in is going to do that? I understand that he wants Murray for his system and having the number one overall pick he's guaranteed to be able to make that happen, but not at the price of giving away last year's number one pick.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unless Az thinks Rosen has some pretty big warts. You would think there would be stories going around about him by now if that were the case though.

      Delete
    2. Digger, ya, AZ even traded up from #15 to #10 to get Rosen, so if we were to get him for a 3rd (doubt that's true) I'd be all over that right now - or sooner. As for the new AZ coach giving away that pick, well, it wasn't his pick so no skin lost... kinda like when McDufus shipped off Cutler, Decker and the punter (can't remember his name) along with whoever else he sent packing. So who knows, maybe AZ's new coach will trade Rosen to make way for Murray? We shall see, but I would be pleased if we got Rosen for a 3rd rd pick. Unless there is a QB in this year's draft JE really wants to go for, to me getting Rosen and Flacco makes sense. Rosen and Flacco under Rich Scangarello's new system with McCartney as QB's coach helping Rosen with his progressions and decision making, I'd say would be as good as drafting any QB with unknown NFL experience - meaning at least with Rosen we'd have tape to identify how he reacted to NFL defenses and where/how he needs to improve... sort of a rookie year intro to the NFL out of the way.

      Delete
    3. I just don’t think Rosen is that good. We will see.

Also mcd drafted decker, think you are think of bmarsh.

      Delete
    4. Yep, I was thinking B-Marsh but Decker popped out of my feeble brain - but that makes the move by McDope even dumber.

As for Rosen, ya, his rookie year was not impressive but he was on a BAD team with BAD coaching. If you look at his stats, they were in the ballpark with Allen and Darnold (just above Allen and just below Darnold). Darnold was the 2nd drafted QB (@#3) while Allen taken 3rd (@#7) and Rosen the 4th (@#10) - not that it matters much but Mayfield was taken 1st overall and Jackson was the 5th taken in round 1 (@#32). Good QB class so IDK, I'd say he's a steal for a 3rd rd pick now... if he can be had for that. No biggie, he's just another option in the mix of things for now. I do think we need to get a future QB this off season since I think we'll finish higher this year and pick a lot lower in 2020 which means moving up to get a good QB will be very costly.

      Delete
  36. If that's the best price that they're getting right now they will just keep him as insurance.

If they are so hell bent on drafting Murray and the fact that they are already fielding offers, there are only a few teams who will be willing to trade for him. So if they want to rid themselves of him and his contract, they will have to take what they can get. Without a market and with teams knowing if they can’t trade him they will probably release him if they draft murray, teams will just wait if the asking price is too high.

    2. as solid as he was for us, we were still searching for a better option. So that is telling in and of itself. He is a journeyman lineman who probably got paid way more than he should have.

      Delete
  52. From reading Paradis’s comments, he wants to go somewhere to win AND be paid top dollar. Not sure he is going to get that with his history of injuries.

Doesn’t bode well for his return if he is hell bent on signing with a contender. Although I don’t see any contemders in the market forna starting center. Maybe Pittsburgh is, not sure. But Indon’t see him being big enough for them.

  53. I like the signings we have made so far. Would be nice to get another DB and a LB or two so we can use our draft picks wisely instead of reaching for guys out of need.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Gould, I know we need to upgrade the oline, but keep in mind they actually have tried the past few years but missed on players or the guys have gotten hurt. We signed Watson from oakland two years ago after he had a great year with them and also brought in Leary who cant stay healthy. lot of money thrown at those two guys for virtually little or no production. Plus we had other guys who didn’t pan out. I think its kind of a buyer beware situation with Elway where he is afraid to bring someone in on a big deal and have them fizzle out. This year though it may be dofferent. I am sure Munchak is involved in looking at guys he thinks would be a good fit. Should hopefully be much improved this season even just because of coaching.

    1. Paradis signed low, like $9M/yr. Morse who was ranked 46th top FA got $11.125M/yr and Matt was ranked 16th a full 30 spots higher than Morse. But those are PFT's FA rankings and IMO, PFT is worthless at judging talent.Guess Matt figured he'd have a better chance to win in JAX. I hoped we would resign him but fuck him, If he's willing to go low for the Jags and not the Broncos... he was puny for a C anyways. Looks like McGovern takes over at C or we pick up another C in the draft or FA and use McG as our swing OL guy now that Turner is gone. We also have Sam Jones at C and he's young 23 and big, Broncos may be high on him, don't know. Gradkowski is behind Jones so, we aren't completely naked at C. It should be interesting to see who Munchak likes where on the O-line. We need a LG behind Leary unless they decide to upgrade there too. Lots of shuffling around this year.

    2. Panthers 1st, I heard year one he is getting 11.5 mil, I’d say year two and three are team options.

We must like Sam Jones, he was drafted as Paradis insurance.

    3. Yep, It was the panthers, my bad on that but the article I read said he got $9M/yr which is right since he got $27M for 3 yrs. A later story mentioned that he would get $11,5M in his first year, When I read it, the story had just broke so not all the details were verified. As for Jones, I think he played after Matt broke his leg - I also know McGovern played there too but I don't remember how much either played after the injury. Hopefully Jones is the next Paradis... or better.

  63. Turner and Paradis got more than they're worth, but good to see other teams wanted them because it shows again that even though our OL has sucked fo a few years now it mostly is about good coaching and teamwork. If coaching can get Bolles to limit the damn penalties I'm liking 4/5 OL right now. Getting a RG or having one on the roster that can step up to fill that opening I think our OL could be respectable finally. If we are, I think it translates into quite a few more wins this year.

  65. Very glad we finally got James. I like Jackson a lot also as a free agent. Better than Roby. In my opinion Roby really sucked last year.
Turner, Paradis and Roby are all on the plus side of credit toward a come pick next year and James, Jackson are negatives. Keenum and Flaco shouldn't count at all because they were trades. I'm thinking we will still be looking for a Right Guard, starting inside linebacker, backup outside linebacker, more beef in the middle of the defensive line and possibly a cornerback. I think all of them we will look for guys who got cut. Then we will be going into the draft looking for best player available. Number 10 will probably be quarterback or cornerback.

  66. We ain't doing crap until our GM finds a QB

    ReplyDelete
  67. Still not sure if I like any of the QB’s in this draft. There are things I like about each, but all have buts attached to them.

Ireally like Haskins. He is a gamer. But he is a one year starter. We have had two of those already in Osweiler and Lynch and neither have worked out. Being an Ohio State guy, I watched him a lot. He throws the ball well and is pretty accurate on all the throws. He is a pocket passer and not a run first QB. Meyer and Day changed up the offense and made it more of a pro style offense which allowed him to play to his strength. I think this will help him in the NFL.

Murray can play, but he is short and likes to run. He will get hurt in the NFL and I fear that if you take away hisnrunning ability, it will not force the defense to soread out and his throwing lanes will narrow causing him to not be as productive. See RG III as an example, although he is taller. I am just extremely concerned about him, although he will likely go to the Cards.

Do we trade for Rosen? clearly the Cards aren’t sold on him so there is obviously some baggage there. Is it worth a few picks to get him if you think he is the guy? Who knows.

Lock seems like another version of Cutler. Strong arm, can play but maybe not the most accurate passer.

Its a damned if you do, damned if you don’t business. It is tough to be a GM and have to make those calls.

    1. I only like Murray this year. But our GM has had several years to find a QB and has failed miserably. Not giving him a pass anymore.

      Delete
    2. Murray didn’t get measured at his pro day. To me that only heightens my concern over him. Failing to get measured implies they feel his listed height isn’t accurate and they are worried about it impacting his draft stock.

      Delete
    3. I agree he shouldn’t get a pass anymore. Last year was his golden opportunity to grab a QB. He didn’t. Now there aren’t any ready ones this year IMO.

    4. We agree, except that I really like Murray, but we won't be interested in him even if he fell to us.

    8. haha he would surely be a bust then.

      Delete
  68. In any event, our line should be a top priority either with the remaining free agency or the draft. Yes we need a QB. But we can’t continue to have our QB running for his life and blame him when we lose. It starts with protection up front. Just like defense starts with lressure up front. When you have great lines, great things happen. We are on our way to fixing the offensive line. We need a replacement for Peko now. I thought we should have nabbed Hankins last year. Had a chance again this year and didn’t get him. Maybe we knew we could fall back and resign Peko for another year and grab a NT in the draft this year or next after solidifying the oline.

  69. According to PFF's 2018 CB rankings, the Bronco now have 2 of the top 5 CB's in the NFL with Harris at #3 and Jackson at #4. With Brock, Yiadom, Langley, Taylor and Mager in our CB room, we should be getting close to what the no fly zone used to be. Maybe we'll lower the focus on drafting a CB to finding one as a value pick in the mid to lower rounds? In any event, the more holes we plug in FA, the less we'll go for need over BPA in the draft. Both guard position are in question with Garcia and Leary coming off injuries... We have 2nd year Schlottmann on PS and who knows what the FO thinks of him, good or bad, but since he was an UDFA and cut once, I don't think he's on our hot list for playing time. I was looking at Gs for this draft and I see there is one named Connor McGovern, G/C, Penn State.. would it be too weird to have 2 Connor McGovern's on our team? LOL! Fun aside, Cody and Lindstrom appear to be the top ranked Gs and should go in 2nd/3rd rds... maybe low 1st. In FA, Quinton Spain TN and John Miller BUF appear to be the 2 best and youngest still available. If we go for either of them, it may be later on... if they don't get signed somewhere else. I really don't know much about any of them, just from a quick browsing - if anyone else has thoughts, please feel free to chime in.

  72. My thoughts on QBs.

I think Elway did a good job last year not being suckered into the QBs after Baker and Sam were taken. I don't think Rosen and Allen are very good. I liked Lamar because he had a very interesting skill set but that isn't Elway's cup of tea.

So Baker and Darnold were the guys but they went 1 and 3.

This year I think Murray, Haskin and Lock are a comparable group to last years. Lock is a better prospect than Allen was and I think he is better than Rosen too. Haskin and Murray both have the talent also. So if Elway can score anyone of these 3 I'd be happy.

    2. As teams are shifting team needs with FA, the 2019 QB class has morphed too. I'm beginning to think more and more that if the Broncos want to draft a top 3 QB, they are going to have to take a major move up the board, maybe as high as #2. Right now I see as many as 4 teams ahead of us who are either likely or possibly looking for a quarterback this year; AZ, OAK, TB, NYG and DET.

Okay, let's say both OAK and TB decides to stay with Carr and Winston, that still leaves AZ, NYG and DET ahead of us meaning we'd have to move up to at least #5 to get a chance at a top 3 QB. IMO, both AZ and NYG are sure to go after one. I doubt JE moves up as high as #2 since SF would likely want our 1st, 2nd and 3rd this year plus our 1st in 2020 to trade, (more or less). If we try TB’s #5 in exchange for our 2019 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks (more or less) we still wouldn't be safe if Gruden decided to shaft us and take a QB at #4 or if TB decided they’d seen enough of Winston and wanted a QB. So, our only safe bet would be the #2 trade with SF and giving up 3 high picks this year and 1 in 2020. That move would assure us a choice of either Murray (if AZ passes on him), Haskins or Lock, whichever JE thinks is the best - pricey though.

So, would you guys go for that or take BPA at #10 and maybe a future “backup” QB in a later round and then shoot for selling the farm in 2020 for a franchise QB? I’m conflicted, it’s a tough decision. Who knows, maybe something else happens before the draft to change the picture again - like Herbert changing his mind and entering the draft - unlikely.

      Delete
    3. Ha, Jags just released Bortles... that may change things slightly too... not that we want him but where he goes could alter other team's needs helping or hurting our position.

      Delete
    4. Also, NYG decided to pay Eli his $5M roster bonus upping the chance they may go with him in 2019... still doesn't rule out them taking a QB at #6, maybe even trading up to get who they like.

      Delete
    5. I don't see DET going QB this year maybe next. If OAK go QB then Carr also enters the pool. If AZ go Murray then Rosen enters the pool. TB looking like they will stay with Winston. I'd be more worried about the fins and maybe Washington moving up. Washington has Case so that may be enough. If the fins miss on Teddy they will be desperate.

I'm thinking we wait. There is a lot of good talent in the top 10 that others will go for before QB. So say Murray goes one. Giants take their QB. DK, White and Taylor I think sneak into the top 10. We may be able to stay put but I'd see us switching with the Jags maybe after the Giants make their pick to get the QB we want.

I'm of the opinion we are going QB in the 1st since there has been no movement about a backup for Flacco (besides Hogan).

I'd also like to get Jackson. Do a Washington and draft two QBs.

      Delete
    6. Did we resign Hogan? His contract is done. Do you think we just told him to "hold tight and we'll get back to you"?

Tyree Jackson fits JE's big QB fetish, so maybe. He's a project though, needs to learn to see the field better - I think his TD to INT ratio was around 2:1, but ya, he's been moving up fast in the rankings, could have potential. I'm wondering about HC Pat Shumur's son Kyle... with Pat being a QB guru of sorts, the kid could have some great training and he has the right size.

      Delete
    7. Brett Rypien also interests me - some think he's the "most polished QB of the class".

"If Rypien were a little bigger with a stronger arm and more athleticism, he'd be in the first-round conversation. I really believe that. He's incredibly experienced and it shows. He's the most polished quarterback in the class. He makes accurate throws to second and third reads. Awesome footwork. Downfield dimes. Pocket-drifting mastery (at times). Other times he doesn't feel pressure mounting. The ball can explode of his hand on long throws to the sideline or down the seam. In other instances, his arm strength leaves a little to be desired and gets him in trouble."

      Delete
    8. You are right. Hogan is an RFA. So he is likely back if we want him.

Jackson is boom or bust. I'm hoping for a late pick that we can develop and then sell high. I'd like as to become a bit of a QB factory like the Patriots have been. Need to find that first guy though.

I will have to look more into Kyle. The issue I have with him is the same one with Daniel Jones. Have they hit their ceilings already with all the professional help they have been getting.

      Delete
    9. Naw, ya never stop learning and improving - especially if you've learned the right skills to begin with. Elway used to say that his dad Jack taught him a lot about his release, footwork and I'm sure, making reads. His dad was a college HC at several colleges.

  73. Nice. Thanks for the QB insight. I like the sound of Rypien.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I know there are pros and cons for all Qbs on scouting reports here is a con on Rypien:

Will lock onto first pre-snap read at times and attempt to force the ball into unnecessary windows, trusting too greatly in his own accuracy to fit the throw. In that he recruits his full body to generate velocity, does not have amazing arm strength, and throws to the sideline will peter out if he can't set a clean base. Likewise, is strained to his limit when attacking outside of the numbers deep, and will frequently put the ball closer to the numbers than to the sideline, which gives CBs plenty of room to make a play. Panics under pressure and often makes ill-advised "hope" throws when under duress; not an escapist. Little small for NFL standards.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, every QB has cons, including the top 3 in this year's draft... but you have to consider the pros too. I added a link to his highlights (ya, I know, just the highs), but watch his reads, he's not a 1 read stare down QB, he goes through all, side to side and his release once he decides who he wants the ball comes out quick. His accuracy is spot on, hitting receivers in stride and he is killer on long balls. As for the con on size you provided, he's way bigger than your guy Murray so, non factor. Finally, he has over a 3:1 TD/INT ratio with a 64% completion rate and 149.3 QB rate over 4 full years as a starter for the Broncos (yes, he's a Bronco). One final note, he's projected as a lower round pick which if we miss getting a top 3, is worth taking or even as a 1-2 punch take. https://youtu.be/Q07EaeBHCns

  75. Gould, your comment on wanting to become a QB factory like NE made me chuckle. I would like to just find "one" QB that can lead this team out of the doldrums. I don't believe that the Broncos have the leadership and expertise to identify "one" young QB that can be groomed and developed, much less make a habit of it. Go ahead Broncos, prove me wrong. I would love to be wrong on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Gould on your comment above:

"I think Elway did a good job last year not being suckered into the QBs after Baker and Sam were taken."

I would counter back that the Jets started behind us in the draft and outmaneuvered Elway to get Darnold. So I understand that Elway wanted and liked Darnold, but I have to disagree with the "good job" of your post, because the Jets beat Elway to the punch and now their franchise has hope and the Broncos still suck at QB.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Obviously I am way down on Elway with his boneheaded Qb moves since the Manning signing. In addition to this causing losing seasons, it also fucks up your salary cap. This year our salary cap for just the QB position will be $26.7M, which does not yet include amounts for a backup or a draft pick. Flacco - $18.5, Keenum $7, Lynch $1.2.

This lunacy is killing our chances.

    1. Well, nobody I know likes to lose, least of which is JE. What I don't like about your criticism is you ignore all the good things he's done and you never offer a better answer. What GM would you like to see? Saying fire him is okay I guess but who then is better - that we can get? We are 3 seasons out of a SB win and we still have a very good base, minus a QB - but to be fair how many great QBs are there and how many realistic opportunities have we had since PFM to land one? IMO, the book is still out on JE. Our 2 biggest whiffs on QB were BO, a 2nd rder who was a project at best and Lynch, who had the body and skills but lacked the maturity, drive and smarts to make it. Lots of teams have made worst picks with higher picks, heck even Lynch (our highest under JE) was a 25th which isn't exactly the best spot to grab a franchise QB. 7th rounders like Siemian and Kelly were like hoping to find a race car in a used car's back lot, just a flyer, and to JE's credit, one was a 2 year starter and the other had potential if he wasn't brain damaged and taken as the last player in a draft. But hey, I'm not trying to get down on ya, I love your input and there is a lot of validity in your criticisms of JE... he sure isn't perfect but then, who is?

      Delete
    2. Great response, thanks. I disagree on the fact that we have a very good base. Elways draft record before 2018 was horrendous and that is why this team has so many holes. We are weak at QB, WR, TE, OL, ILB, Safety and CB. We are very good at RB, DL, and OLB. In my opinion.

I don't know all of the GM's or candidates, but let me give you one name that has kicked Elway's ass all over the field. John Dorsey. And the GM for NE is not bad, some guy named Bill something. I've also heard of Les Snead.

Again, I have not yet called for Elway to be fired, although I don't know who would fire him? But he needs to have more drafts like 2018 and he needs to hire someone that can evaluate a QB.

You mention BO and Lynch. What about his free agent signings of Sanchez, Keenum and Flacco?

I know HOF QBs are extremely difficult to find, I just want a good young QB that we can develop and groom. Of the top of my head, I would say that 25 or so of the 32 teams have better QBs that Denver. And that is sad.

The Denver offense is so damn boring. Why does Elway insist that our QB has to know how to play behind center. The league shotgun about 80% of the time.

I just want Murray but know that Elway will go some other direction and waste even more years.

  79. OBF, I'd love for us to be a QB farm. But yeah my caveat on that is we need to find that first guy. You could say we already a QB factory with the amount of QBs we turnover lol.

"I would counter back that the Jets started behind us in the draft and outmaneuvered Elway to get Darnold."

I'd also say the Jets took a huge risk moving up to the 3rd over a month out from the draft. At that point Baker wasn't number one, it was Darnold and Rosen. They moved up knowing they were getting a QB and thats about it. At that time Elway was probably also confident we could get one of the guys we liked at 5. In the end it didn't play out that way, Baker went one and Chubb at 5 was a good fall back (BPA).

Flacco - $18.5, Keenum $7, Lynch $1.2. My understanding is Keenum signed a new contract. Of which we are paying 4 mil. Washington is on the hook for the other 3.5mil.

"Elways draft record before 2018 was horrendous". Think we have been over this a million times. Horrendous is a strong word. He has been average. We can be competitive with average. But like everyone we want him to be better.

I'd also like a young QB to get behind, to develop and support. Don't think it will be Murray since he is going to go 1.

I'd like to look at McCarren. Young with upside.

Garica gone yeah! LaCosse also signed with Pats.

Think we need a new post for wave two of FA.
