2017 Free Agency

Let's go shopping!

  1. 1st one is Ron Leary.
    Age 27 6'3' 320 Memphis
4-year deal, little north of $8.5M/yr, per source. Guarantee approaching $20M.

  2. More rumors swirling that Romo will either be traded to Denver or Houston. Boy that would be a huge slap in the face to Os. Bahahaha.

Part of the rumors are that we are in talks with the Jets about TS.

Damn I really am not liking this Romo shit. We may as well kiss our playoff chances goodbye if he comes here. Damn Romo hex.

  3. If I am Campbell and his wife, and the money between Jacksonville and Denver is close, it is a no brainer. Jacksonville is a mess and has never done anything. Denver is always in the mix and is committed to winning.

  4. Campbell signing with Jags. Hope he is happy losing.

    1. They upped their offer. He's getting 15M.

    2. Depends on the guaranteed offer, but yup too high for us and too big of a difference for him to turn down.

    3. Until his ass gets cut because they pissed away too much money in FA and still suck. Lol

  5. With dipshit Jerry Jones now wanting something in retrurn for Romo, I say we tell Jones to fuck off and we continue in free agency. If Romo gets released and we still have cap space, then ok. If Romo gets released but wants to go on a Manning like tour, I say we tell him to fuck off and we continue in free agency.

BREAKING: Texans trade Brock Osweiler & 2018 2nd round pick to the Browns, per @AdamSchefter

    1. Probably means Houston will overpay for Romo.

And Os deserves to go to the Browns. Fuck him.

    2. WOW!! Maybe they are clearing the deck to trade something to Jerry for Romo?? A guy can hope!

  7. The Broncos gave up a second round pick to get Brock Osweiler in 2012. Five years later, the Texans gave one up to unload him.

    ReplyDelete
  8. This is awesome. Bet Os is wishing he had stayed in Denver now. Sucks to be him!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah they gave the browns a 2nd and sixth just to get a fourth, they basically threw away Os. They could now turn around and give that 2nd straight to the cowboys for romo.

    1. I'm an idiot that is back to front, Texans don't have the 2nd.

    1. If he is released, do they take the cap hit or the texans? If they do, why in the hell would they give up a second round pick and take a huge cap hit, besides the obvious that it is the Browns?

      Delete
    2. Brad Brad The Browns did not give up a 2nd. They received a 2nd. They basically paid $17M in cash for a 2nd round pick. They are so far below the cap that it helps them get to the floor.

The Texans saved some cash and reduced their cap hit to only $9M. HAHA Only $9M

      Delete
  13. Reports are now surfacing the browns could trade or release Osweiler. I could see them trying to flip him, but why the hell would they release him?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Not that I am for getting Romo, but how funny would that be if Elway swoops in and gets him and the atexans are left fucked along the side of the road? Lol

    ReplyDelete
  15. Elway always makes an unexpected splash in free agency. I am expecting nothing less this year. Just curious who it will be.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My biggest issue with Romo is this...

If we get him, clearly he isnt durable. He will go down. Just a matter of when. If we get him, it sounds like TS will be traded. Joseph has already all but stated that Lynch has a lot of improvement that needs to happen before he is ready to start. So when Romo goes down, Lynch will have to go in. Or, we need to allocate a roster spot for another backup QB, which takes more money. The entire thing just doesnt make sense to me to do.

  17. All the tackles except Okung are gone.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Per Troy Renck

In case you are wondering, Trevor Siemian had great workout today. Shoulder doing well. He's why Broncos won't get into bidding war for Romo

    ReplyDelete
  19. Brad. I answered some of your questions above. The Browns did not give up a 2. They received OS and a 2. They basically are eating his salary for a 2nd round pick.

Other teams are asking about OS and the Browns are supposedly willing to eat half of his salary for a 3rd.

The Browns are in total trying to buy a 2nd and 3rd for $8.5M and give up a 4th and late rounder

    ReplyDelete
  20. Okung is signing with the Chargers

    ReplyDelete

    1. 4-year deal for $53M. Guaranteed $25M

Too much for him, but the available talent sucks so he gets overpaid.

      Worried about LT for Broncos.

  21. Okung getting a heap of money, they over paid.

Saw Chris Baker got signed as well. Bummer.

  22. So we still have a heap of guards and no tackles.

Wait we haven't cut Stephenson yet???

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tackles left.
The trade for guys. Peters, Thomas, Staley.
Then still Beachem, Clady, Vollmer, Watson (who we are looking at), Remmers, Pasztor.
    Not good.

  24. NT Williams resigned with Ravens. Bummer. Hopefully we go after someone like Logan.

    Yeah Tackle market is week.

Webster will be somewhere else with a chance to start. Good luck to him.

  25. Did some digging on Leary. He missed 2015 but there is this:

Leary wasn't selected in the 2012 NFL Draft because of a degenerative left knee condition (osteochondritis dissecans),[1] that could potentially shorten his career.

2013: Dud: No player earned a lower grade than Ronald Leary (-9.4). The former undrafted free agent was largely decent but had a tricky middle spell to his season where he gave too much ground in pass protection.

2014: Dud: He’s not been a dud, but Ronald Leary is the weakest link in a strong group and even in saying that it owes a lot to a horrible Week 1 performance. Since then he’s found his feet, and it’s the collective strength of this unit that you feel comfortable with all the starters.

2016: At left guard, the loss of La’el Collins actually upgraded the unit, with veteran Ronald Leary having a fine season in his place. Leary didn’t surrender a sack all season, and was PFF’s No. 21 ranked guard, earning a grade of 81.8.

Steady improvement and I think he played with a chip on his shoulder last year after losing his spot to Collins.

Hopefully his knees hold up over the length of this deal. Had a few concussions and missed the end of the year with a back injury. His health seems like the only possible blocker to him being a solid addition.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It has been a rather boring opening to FA for Bronco fans. I knew Leary was not the top G in FA. He was, however, near the top, and one who was in our price range. We talked about how we didn't feel G was the top need. Elway thought differently though. It has been the primary focus. We also talked how Garcia was a backup caliber player that reminded us of ManRam, but the glaring holes on both T spots blinded us to LG being the biggest hole. I guess it could be because we don't really know all the behind the scenes stuff. Like did the other Gs suck so bad that Shoefeld had to be played there? We kinda thought Shoefeld sucked so bad he had to be played there. 1st talked about Sambrailo's injuries. If healthy, big if, can he play left or right Tackle? We don't have all the inside info on what Elway is thinking. I do know other teams OLs fielded worse starting lineups than us and ranked higher than us because of poor execution. My feeling is our OL can do way better with teamwork and better coaching. How much? IDK for sure. They must have somewhat of a plan though and moving Garcia out of the LG spot was important in that plan evidently. In my mind we still have 3 holes on the OL with 2-3 decent players to fill them. I would guess we are scrambling to fill those holes, but haven't got a clue as to how that will transpire. Maybe a trade for a LT and signing Watson for RT. Day 2 should be interesting!

A DE and a NT are still high on the need list as well as a slot WR. I don't think we have to go high priced on any of those though.

Cleveland still wants Grarapolo the way it sounds. Sure hope they don't cave and give NE the #1 pick overall for him. NE with Miles Jack! That would suck!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Evidently we don't do tampering well, legal or otherwise! I was really hoping they had a trade or something tee'd up and ready to go for free agency, but it doesn't appear so.

The local talking heads here in Dallas seem to think Romo is heading for Houston. For whatever that's worth.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I will repeat some of my comments before free agency.

Without Manning, Denver is not a hot spot for attracting free agents, especially not for less than they can get elsewhere.

Digger replied that maybe out elite defense would be a draw. Nope. And until we get some run stuffers, they are not nearly as elite as 2 years ago.

So if you wanted a stud like Calais Campbell, you needed to at least match the offer and not be 2 million less. Otherwise you don't get him. And that may be ok.

I see a lot of "at least Elway doesn't overpay". But the market is what it is and we no longer get the premium free agents. Ok, if you draft good, but we have sucked in drafting o linemen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree.
You get what you pay for.
Leary is not all that good.
Maybe it meant more to us than other teams that he has been primarily a LG.

      Delete
  29. Next comment. Brad said that Elway always makes a splash in free agency. Not even close to true the last few years. We made a splash with Manning and then made a splash when Ware, Ward, Talib and Saunders all wanted to play with Manning and we got some great deals on them.

Since then the biggest signing in 2015 was Owen Daniel and 2016 Russel Okung. Hardly big splashes.

    1. Ware fell into his lap. We almost were stuck with Jared Allen for the same price.

    2. yup, we have been spoiled as Bronco fans. And that's a great thing. But we must be realistic and smart going forward to continue our success

      Delete
  30. I'm not overly disappointed that we probably will not get Romo. I am disappointed that we were probably saving some cap space for Romo and we did not get one of the top offensive tackles or top defensive linemen.

    1. I'm wondering what's wrong with Beachem. We looked at him and he's still unsigned. Must be damaged goods.
      Hankins is still there.

  31. The D did have appeal to getting Campbell here. As you said though, not enough to overcome $2M less/yr. At that point of the fans and players getting all excited and Jax just whacks it out of the park by upping it to 15M. Disappointing to say the least. WTF Elway!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think the appeal was the defense. I think it was that he was from Denver

    2. True.
I know I'd have a hard time getting my wife moving back to Colorado just because I'm from there on the idea of taking way less money.

      Delete
  32. It is what it is and if we were gonna pay Campbell that kind of dough then we should have just paid the price to keep Jackson. However, we found out how much we missed Jackson (more than we thought we would) and got a 2nd chance at making it right. Instead we're out pussyfooting around with yet another offseason of QB controversy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Looking at what is left for Oline especially at Tackle I don't think it's worth signing anyone who is left unless we get a steal of a deal where there is minimal risk.

Maybe we are fine trying to fill that need in the draft. I hear we are very high on Bolles from Utah and view him as a Day 1 plug and play tackle (could just be a rumor mill). I think at this point we are better off just filling our other needs the best we can with better quality players and values after the initial rush and using this deep draft everywhere but the Oline to fit our other needs.

The scheme change could be good, and could be bad for the current linemen we have. Maybe with a different position coach that unit improves, but I don't really think Ty is a fit for power scheme and wouldn't be surprised if he is cut before the season.

I said Quiet earlier because all we heard was media hype and speculation as to what the Broncos were doing and all they did was sign one G who supposedly has injury concerns and was a one year wonder. Hopefully he keeps his level of play up cause we need him, but with $40mil to spend all in all it was a little disappointing. Maybe we can work on a trade for a tackle, but that also seems unlikely.

I'll still count this off season as a win if we some how end up not getting Romo and shipping off Siemian.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No Romo or Siemian. You must have seen more indication that I did that Lynch was anywhere near being ready to play.

I will cause a riot here and state that I think is nowhere near ready to play now. I saw him in practice last year and he was lost frustrated and walking around with his head hanging. He was disappointing in the regular season. Not saying he is a bust, but right now he is closer to a bust than a franchise QB

      Delete
    2. I think Atwater meant stick with Siemian and Lynch. It does read as he thinks the offseason would be not a bust if we don't get Romo and can ship off Siemian, but I think he meant the just not getting Romo part. Everyone assumes the two go hand in hand. IMO, even if we get Romo, shipping off Siemian is a HUGE mistake.
Besides, I take your word on the Lynch status more than many of the other bloggers because you have actually seen him in camp. Pretty sure you had the same reservations on BO.

      Delete
    3. Yeah I meant if we don't get Romo or end up trading siemian this offseason will be successful in my view. I don't think Lynch is anywhere near ready. Siemian didn't look like a rookie to me last year at all and I have hopes he can turn into a cousins quality level starter with proper protection and a semblance of a run game.

  34. What are the Deadskins doing?? Seems like firing your general manager on the day free agency opens might not be the best time to do it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And tell him to stay home from the combine. Rumor mill says he was vocal about how stupid it was to not pay him what he was worth last year. I agree with him. Then when rumors surfaced about his drinking, Washington didn't stand behind him. They pretty much left him out in the deep water with the sharks. Now they had to pay him to let him go. It won't get published that way, but that's what I read into it. Snyder and Co are idiots. Ever since he bought the team he's been an idiot.

      Delete
    2. Digger, about McCloughan, he supposedly fired from his last 2 jobs for boozing and from what I read, he was fired for "cause" which lets the Skins off the hook on paying him. McCloughan not going to the combine may have something to do with it - maybe he was too hungover to go? Lots of rumors on it, power struggle being one, but whatever, he's gone, Washington is a wreck either way.

      Delete
    3. He's a booze hound. We'll respected by many people though. He got slandered by Allen, IMO.

      Delete
  35. Atwater
We can not just assume we can get a LT in the draft. We have to at least get someone. Even if a draft pick is the answer at starting LT.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Warford's deal was 4yrs/34M with 17M guaranteed. Comes out to 8.5M/yr like Leary's deal, but from what I heard we can essentially get out of it in a year if we choose to. The Saints are locked in for two years. Also, like I mentioned earlier, maybe the fact Leary was a LG appealed to us since Garcia played there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm not disappointed about FA right now, lots of players left and the draft. IMO, the 1st day of FA is a suckers game for desperate teams. Most reach, overpay and if my memory serves me, I don't remember many "splash" signings that have made a big difference for teams in the past, with many flops and some okay deals the standard.

Truth is, impact players are rarely released by teams - at least not knowingly, unless they come with red flags or team crushing deals. The "stars" on a team are great but they don't win championships, that usually comes from the depth of quality at mid tier level players that don't make the headlines. Those gems are usually found AFTER the initial FA frenzy and at better deals, I assume JE knows that.

Some fans wanted all the top FAs at bargain basement prices. Unrealistic. Those same fans also believe players will choose Denver just because it's Denver or because of PFM, etc. Not true, money talks, organization talks, record, division opponents and then players have the final say.

Take Joe Thomas. Some fans still think Denver should up their offer for him, even offer picks or quality players for him but the man has stated repeatedly that he wants to play out his career in CLEV. Not to mention that he's been with them for many years and hasn't produced a winning season for the Browns - yet somehow he's supposed to come to Denver and change the team? No logic there.

As for Romo, I hope Houston gets him. They're willing to bid crazy for him and frankly, if I were Romo, I'd see Houston as the better choice, more chance of winning their division and with equal or more talent on both sides of the ball. On top of the money and the chance of winning, Romo has a family and staying in Texas means he doesn't have to uproot them or leave family and friends... a big deal for family men. Besides, if Dak goes down he can make a short trip to Dalls to ask them "How's it going"? LOL!

Bottomline, wait and see is the only thing to do for Bronco fans. You can't judge players by their price, draft spot or past accomplishments. I'll take the hungry lions over the ones just fed if I'm looking to improve.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Love this, "I'll take the hungry lions over the ones just fed if I'm looking to improve."
So many times we see the big payday destroying the player. BO! Often times it destroys the team. Not to mention the fact that injuries happen. Having a high priced player on IR is devastating to a team's season usually.

maybe we keep Stevenson. He's only 4M/yr. Maybe he can get better with new scheme and coaching. Doubt it.

    2. Interesting. Got stuck reading Raider blog for awhile.
Raider fans only thought Watson was worth a one year deal for maybe 3-4 million.

  40. Tackle market is weak so we were going to have to pay a bit more but 3 years 18 mil isn't too bad for a tackle. Just need to keep him healthy. I like the signing but Watson is a RT, we would be crazy trying him as an LT. so still need to find someone for there. But we are heading in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The first report i had read was screwed up. It said the Browns had sent a second rounder for Os and a fourth round pic.

    ReplyDelete
  42. From Watson's press conf today. I like it . Hope it is real.

Watson on meshing w Oline. "If they are getting into something, I am getting into something. If they are throwing punch, I am throwing punch"

  43. I would disagree OBF. Elway made a big splash last year getting Okung on a very team friendly deal. He was always pretty good, just had health issues. He didn't end up being effective for us, but that was a big deal last year considering the little cap space we had. It actually ended up being the better move than keeping Clady, since Clady would have cost us $10 million, and he ended up getting hurt early on and missed the season. So we would have been in even worse shape as we would have been scrambling just to put a body out there at LT.

    ReplyDelete
  44. As far as Os is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised to see Cleveland trade him to NE with their two second round picks...their own and the one they got from Houston as well as paying some of his salary this year. Not sure if NE would bite on this or not. They would get two really good picks, a young cap friendly QB that they could release after the season without much dead cap hit if he sucks.

    1. Logan sounds good. Heard we're thinking about Hankins.

  46. I wonder if Elway and company get so caught up in getting extra comp picks that sometimes it effects how they operate in FA. So far we have signed Leary and Watson and Okung and Williams have signed elsewhere. We still need a couple more guys, but Webster is getting looks. I'm sure Watson, Walker and Winn will get signed by somebody. Ware should be biggest attraction. We got a shot at getting some comp picks yet next year. I didn't think there was a chance. Signing Romo would put an end to it though.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm surprised we aren't looking at Poe to be honest. Maybe hey think he's out of their price range but he could be a great NT for us. Get some push on the inside and eat up blockers. He is a much better player than Sylvester Williams in my opinion. We have the cap space.

I'd be fine with hankins as he's a decent run stuffer and still young. Would be more of a 2 down rotation player on the line as opposed to Poe who could be a 3 down player more frequently. He would be my number 1 target of the available players if we can get him for obviously the right price.

  48. Broncos signed NT Domata Peko, formerly of the Bengals, to a two-year, $7.5 million contract.

The Broncos also inked ex-Colts DT Zach Kerr to a two-year contract. A Bengal his entire 11-year career, Peko's snaps have gradually declined, along with his effectiveness. Peko is a gigantic body in the middle, but he's a replacement-level talent at this point. He will be a rotational run stuffer in Denver

    ReplyDelete
  49. Broncos signed DT Zach Kerr to a two-year contract.

Kerr wasn't tendered as a restricted free agent with the Colts. He'll compete for a sub-package role after playing 317 snaps last year. The Broncos also added DT Domata Peko to their defensive line mix.

  52. SuspicionS are correct. Stevenson staying. He did take $2M off of the guaranteed part though. Only guaranteed for 2M, but can still earn all 4M by making the roster of 53. Kinda what I wanted of the fact I wished we could see how he responds to different scheme and coaching. Sucks that I think we owe him 2M if we cut him. Anybody remember what we would've owed if we cut him now? I think it was 1M.

    1. I agree although I do think Stephenson was one of our weakest links on the OL. I will say this much for him, he did try hard. After he got benched and then re-started, it seemed to light a fire under him in the way he played - not that much better, but with much more effort. He still got beat but was sweating his ass off and doing anything he could to hold off his man - including holding and tripping. That says to me that under a different scheme (more aggressive), better coaching under Davidson, improvement at G, TE and QB plus the incentive to regain half his pay (if he performs wel)l, it may just be enough to help the offense get better.

I still have my doubts and still want to address the line in the draft but we all knew we'd be keeping some of the OL from 2016 and it looks like they're willing to gamble on Donald again. Good luck kid and put the work in!

  53. I've read some more on Watson and liked what I read. It seems he thinks some of his injury issues were because of conditioning and part of the reason he signed with Denver was to get with Richieson (sp?) who he says is the best in the business. Sounds like a real hard worker, who has played left tackle a fair bit. More at RT, but seems pretty familiar with LT too.

I'm pretty meh about Stephenson coming back. We do need an experienced backup, I guess, and 2 mil isn't a bad price for one. The law of averages says he can't suck as bad as last year, right?? I hope??

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ok so here are some scenarios i can see possibly playing out. Romo is reportedly to be released, since Dallas is seeing that neither Denver or Houston is willing to give up anything for the QB. If Elway truly wants him, I think he will sign him. Sounds like the Jets like TS. So if we get Romo, I see us then turning around and sending TS to the Jets. There have been rumors that we would trade him to the Jets for DE Sheldon Richardson. if we can do that and continue to add depth and potential starters on the oline in the draft, I would be ok with it.

Hightower is still available. I am surprised he hasnmt been signed yet. I wonder if he wants too much money. He could be our replacement for Trevathan as a run stopping ILB.

Jags also cut their NT. I wonder if we will have interest in him.

    1. I'm hearing rumors that Romo wants to go to Houston and not Denver, because of a lot better offensive line, running backs, and tight end and also no state tax in Texas plus much close to his home in Dallas.

    2. If we trade TS to the Jets for Richardson, his 5th year $8M contract, suspension and other off field crap and knowing he is a locker room malcontent, I'd have to say NO. 61. The story here in Dallas today is that both Houston and Denver told Jerry to stuff it, they are not going to trade for Romo. If the cowboys cut him, they'll be happy to try to sign him, but no trades. So the speculation is the Jones is going to hold onto him until June 1 so he doesn't have to pay him as much. Romo's camp dropped the "I might retire and take up broadcasting" card.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't think holding him until 6/1 accomplished anything for the Cowboys. They can cut him now with a post 6/1 designation and accomplish the same thing as waiting until 6/1.

    3. Well, I think auto correct started the first ones on Brock. If you want to start calling him Crayon, it's OK by me.

Back to Wade. I heard Ware might do the same later on in the year. No sense him being out there mid-summer sweating his ass off if he's switching teams. I knew we didn't have room to keep him and I'm sure the offer to stay wasn't very good. I was hoping he could stay for one more year though.
I wonder if Wade wants any other FAs. I'll be surprised if he doesn't go after Watson.

  66. I know the Okung deal didn't work out well, but it was a big signing at the time. We have grabbed Manning, Talib, Ware, Ward, Vasquez, Sanders, and a few others who didn't pan out. I know not all those guys panned out or were great, and several of them came all in the same season, but all were crucial to us winning it all. He usually gets what he needs and then turns to the draft to continue to add future depth to the team. Some of the guys haven't worked out like we'd hoped, but we have had several who have done well. He needs to do better though if we are going to continue to be competitive and not have to break the bank in free agency.

  73. I am a big Elway fan and he was instrumental in getting Manning to get here. Once that happened, the Manning factor induced Ware, Ward, Talib and Saunders to come here and try to win a Super Bowl. Fortunately at the time we had huge salary cap space and some of these guys came at a discount to try to win a Super Bowl.

So I give great credit to Elway, but without Manning the discount days are gone. Given a tighter salary cap, Elway has not had any splashes in free agency in 2015,2016 or 2017.

2015 and 2016 did not have any splashes but had lots of flushing.

As for OT, I'm not a fan of Robinson, something seems of. Bolles lacks the size is old and a project, I don't like the fit. Ramczyk I like, fits that Joe Thomas, Stanley mould. Though got a sore hip I think he could be the one we are tracking.

IDK if Johnson and McCoy do.

  77. I don't think Headscratchin was implying we get Revis, just stating he was let off from kicking ass and taking names. Revis has said he won't play this year unless he gets at least 8M. He gets 6M if he doesn't play at all from the Jets. Signing somewhere else and moving would have to be worthwhile. Besides most think he should play Safety now. He said he is willing to do that and wants to play this year. IDK, if he'll find a deal or not. It more than likely won't be us.

I'm not positive, but I feel we are done on the OL until the draft. Dunlap does suck (OBF's summary). The talking heads think it's a good idea so they spread the rumor that sources said we want him. My source (my own brain) says re-upping Stevenson on a make the roster kind of deal, means we are going to go with the hope Stevenson, Sambrailo, Watson, maybe Schofield and a draft pick or two will be battling for the two T positions. If Stevenson doesn’t win a starting job (Watson more than likely has one of them), he will still be cut. We pretty much just bought some time on him to find out more about him. IMO, he is about as good as Dunlap. LOL. I expect a high draft pick to be used. I expect him to probably start at one of the two T spots with Watson at the other. I expect our new OG, Leary, to start at the LG position and a battle for the RG spot between Garcia, McGovern, Schofield and whoever else we got. I also would not put it past us to draft a C that could start if Paradis isn't ready. The Wyoming C maybe. Maybe he would start at RG after Paradis does get healthy, IDK.
As for sources and what will we do at #20. We'll, according to sources Elway said he wants McCaffery. So, if there is any truth at all to that, usually there is a little in everything, you can bet your ass that that is not what we want to do. 40 or so days til the draft, Elway hauls out the bluff early. Unreal someone bought into it! Sheesh!

      RT-Watson or Robinson

      Delete
    2. Digger, I agree with drafting Cam Robinson if it's between him and Bolles, if Ramczyk is already gone by #20, otherwise I'd go for Ramczyk. I think I mentioned my other guy in another post several weeks (months?) ago, Taylor Morton from Western Michigan. He's a beast and was a big part in the Broncos (conveniently, that's WMU's team name too) being one of the highest scoring teams in the nation. When I mentioned him, he was ranked as the # 7-9 OTs in this year's draft but I see he's moved up to the #4 currently and rising. He's now projected as a rd #2 pick (4-5 previously). We may move up in the 2nd to land him or even take him at #20. I think he's a great value pick that's just beggining to get noticed.

As for C, we already have 5 on the team and IMO, the Broncos like Brenner or Day to be the BU. Ferentz may not make the team, him and Paradis are the oldest at 27 which isn't old, but who knows, Ferentz may stick. Dismukes is the other C and I don't anything about him - didn't even know he was on the team.

From what I understand, the hip injuries to Matt aren't a big deal, sorta akin to getting yer knees scoped, so he should be ready fo OTAs and beyond.

As for McCaffery, I like the kid and can see him helping but IMO, we have enough weapons, we just need OL (coaching/scheme) to make them more effective. If for some odd reason Mc drops to the 2nd rd, I'd like to see us take him, even if we had to trade up some spots to do it. If not, find a good kick returner in the lower rds and I think we come out about the same.

    3. I'd take McF at 20 if he was there and not just because of his name. He has tremendous explosiveness, quickness and speed that our other RB's do not have. And coming out of the backfield on passes or playing in the slot, I think he would add a whole "nuther" element to the offense.

This kid is at full speed after one step.

On your comment about not needing another weapon like Mc jr.
Although the OL was the priority, I have thought from the get go that we have to have another weapon. Most say it should be a better TE, aka, Howard. Some say a slot WR like Ross. Some othere areally con Vince we need all 3 aspects of Mc's game. Personally, I lIke the thought of a slot TE. There are a few of them in this draft. Engram being my favorite. He will go top of the 2nd though and now that we seem to be thinking a high draft pick to compete for starting LT, I just don't know what I want really. Good thing we have over a month yet. Maybe we trade down, get your Moton, and then trade up and get my Engram.

    1. Oh, we can always use another weapon if they are killer, I just don't see much use if we can't block for them. Our RBs are supposed to be above average in CJ and Booker, but they're getting killed at the line or behind it. Half the time (or more), out TEs are being held back to help with the blocking and our receivers can't get downfield because the QB is running for his life or being body slammed to the turf, so we wind up doing quick dinks or dunks fo 2-3 yards.

It's not just the QB and receivers playing catch or RBs juking through 11 defenders for untouched TDs, wish it was. We need some meat and potatoes, not caviar on toast crackers.

I do see the need for and the lack of a threat on STs (if I wanted to buy some pussy I'd go to Denvers STs). Seriously though, we need some return help on STs and Mc certainly would help there, but I wouldn't spend a 1st on getting it. If we want an all round slot/back/returner, than Mixon is bigger, faster, equal hands and cheaper (if we can keep him from knocking out the cheerleaders). Mc is a luxury pick for teams that are set in areas we aren't, like the Pats.

That said, Elway will probably draft Mc if he's there at #20. LOL!

      Delete
  82. I've always been a believer that you need to go "best player" available, no matter the position, with the first round of the draft. Why pass on a stellar CB, for instance, because you need an OT - especially in a draft where OTs are weak? That is really the only solid chance you have of getting a weapon. Sure there are exceptions (TD, Brady, etc) but how often does that happen, compared to a first round pick becoming a weapon?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ya gotta address needs at some point and if it isn't FA, then it's the draft - so far, FA hasn't soved our problems. Say the best player available at #20 was a S - would you take him with Simmons and Parks? Probably not, you'd just go to the next man down the board.

I agree it's never a good idea to reach for a "need" but you have to consider need, so if a guy is available that fills that need at 3 slots lower but some other player that was projected to go 3 slots higher than where yer drafting but dropped to your pick, IMO, most teams would go with the need pick over BPA. Yer talking 2-5 slots plus or minus, that's a 4 to 10 slot swing... not that much to get what you want.

      Delete
    2. This year for instance, Ramcyzk is listed on most evaluations in the mid teens on the lists of top prospects. Boles and Robinson are in the mid 30s. If Ramcyzk is available at 20 then grab him fast. But if he is gone, why skip McCaffrey, Mike Williams, or even Zach Cunningham (all low 20s rated) to take a tackle rated in the 30s? The drop off in the quality of players between the 10th pick (the top of your +-) and the 30th pick (bottom of your +-) is huge. That's basically why I said in the first round.

But I should qualify it further, because if the best player available at 20 this year is a QB, I'd pass, unless I could sign and trade him.

      Delete
    3. If Watson fell to us at 20 I'd pick him and trade Sieman. Have the two first rounds compete for the job.

      Delete
    4. You would have to consider it for sure. I think we're going to need Siemian this year. I'm not convinced Lynch is ready to go yet. I hope I'm wrong, but he strikes me as Brock 2.0 I don't see the ceiling for him that many do. I don;t see him becoming an elite QB. I don't see Siemian doing that either, but if he could be used to get a real tackle, then sign me up! I doubt he has that much value though.

      Delete
    5. I think it should be BPAFU. Best Player available for us. If that's Watson and we didn't get Romo, but have a trade partner lined up for getting something good for Siemian, then yeah draft Watson.
If we do want a RB/ kind of guy (which if combine interviews say anything, we do) and Cook and McCaffery are both still there, but our board has McJr higher, we go McJr. Many would say why didn't we go BPA? well on our board, we did.

      Delete
    6. I think too many fans put way too much faith in pre-draft rankings. If those rankings were all in agreement (they aren't) and they were all even 90% correct on average (they aren't even close to that), then I could understand the blind following.

Bottom line, the Broncos or any team needs to do their homework and make damn sure their board is better than any other team. History tells us that hasn't been the case, especially with our top 3 picks. If it weren't for the UDFAs and low rpund hits, the Broncos would be in the bottom quarter or third of draft successes.

If the "experts were so good with they're evaluations, they'd be scouting for teams rather than punching keyboards (didn't Maylock just get hired by a team?).

IMO, it's also part of a game or payola scam for the "analysts". They promote all kinds of mocks, big boards and such that change week to week leading up to the draft - all ending with their "final" mock or rankings a week or few days before the draft. So why all the bullshit months before? Hell, these guys are doing rankings 2-3 years in advance of the draft! you can now find top "prospects" for 2018, 2019, etc. It's entertainment which means $$$. That's why most fans are left scratching their heads after the drafrs and also why their are so many busts at the high rounds or surprise gems in the basement.

Frankly, I don't care who the Broncos draft in any round... just as long as they get it right. A player's draft position means nothing to me, other than a footnote for predictors to gloat over when they're right or whistle past the graveyard when they're wrong.

I do know this, the Broncos need an "A" draft this year that pans out to an "A+" now and 2-3 years down. They have been losing ground for over a year, (yes, they won the SB but the cracks were showing then too). We cannot keep relying on FA to patch our wounds, we need to be more like the Mexican axolotl and regenerate our own body parts rather than looking for body donors to bail us out consistently.

      Delete
    7. Very well stated and absolutely true. We desperately need a "A" draft this year.

      Delete
  83. To me, saying BPA is irrelevant. According to whose opinion is that player BPA? There are a lot of different rankings and the variances on a guy like Cam Robinson are huge. about 40% think he has the skills to play T. Some of those even say he'd be a 10 year starter at LT. The other 60% are thinking he'll be a G. So who do you go by in your rankings? The Broncos board of course, right? OK. Do you have access to that? Then there is also the fact that they could see one their top guys on their board sliding a bit. They then can try to move up to get him! Like 1st said, you also have the swing of about 4 players each way of our pick being ranked there or being a very reasonable BPA. Anyway my point is, the only pick that actually can be considered BPA is #1. That is Miles Garrett. He also would be BPA at #20! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Maybe we all should do a 40 player ranking of top picks. Then we average out each player's #. During the draft we could all sit watching the 1st round go down and have our BPA for #20. Sounds like fun to me.

    ReplyDelete
  85. That sounds like fun, Digger. See if any of us can get closer than the experts. The times I've tried that in the past, you can do pretty well until the trading starts and a team start reaching, or a last minute arrest happens and someone drops out of sight.

But you're saying just the top 40 players taken, not necessarily which team takes them? Don't know if that would be easier or not!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes. Top 40. Not a mock draft. Just rank them. I'll be honest, some I haven't even looked at. Like the QBs and the CBS. Hard to rank them then, but we can try. Then we'll average out each player and see where dbtf mock them. Maybe it could help to try figure out where trades should happen if a player you think a team wants is due to go higher than their pick according to our rankings. Like say OJ Howard ends up ranked higher than who you think wants him so they would probably think about trading up for him.

    6. That's alright 1st. How about after I average them out between Head, G and me, I post them and you can tell us where we went wrong.

    7. He could probably spend more time telling me where mine is wrong than submitting one himself! I've never done a mock draft before. No kidding, that was a LOT harder than I thought it would be, especially after I got past the late teens. That's why I wimped out and only did the first round.

    8. I know. It seemed so easy at first. Then at about 8 or 9 it started getting way tougher.

  92. I missed the signing of OLB Kasim Edebali last Monday. Younger version of Dakota Watson? Sounds like he plays decent special teams too.

Gould said above somewhere something about it was OK because we signed that bloke from NO.

  93. Seems the rumors about Joe Thomas are starting to heat up again. I am not sure what I would be willing to give up to get him though.

  94. I think I read that on Mile High Report and decided it was wishful thinking on the part of the author. Supposedly Thomas told his agent he'd love to play in Denver and then repeated that on a sports talk show. Cleveland wanted 2 no 1 picks last time (?) and Broncos said no. I might do it for two 1's right now. That would be a 20 this year and with Thomas on the team, it could be an even lower pick next year, say 24? I don't think we're going to beat New England in the playoffs this year, unless the O picks it up big time. We'd still have holes to fill, but Thomas gets us a lot closer to making a run this year than anyone we could get in the draft. At least in my humble opinion.

    1. Trading for Joe Thomas would be huge.

    2. Thomas would be a good pick up for sure. At least for a few more years. I don't think we can afford the price tag.

    3. The price tag for the contract sure is eye watering. I think the price of the draft picks is doable, but would certainly understand turning it down. I'd hope the asking price has dropped some with two years of age added since the last go around, but the Brownies know Denver needs him badly so who knows what the asking price is?

    4. I really don't think it's on the table. Clev has plenty of picks.

  95. Yeah but it sounds like his agent is really pushing for it. I am guessing because he thinks Thomas may rework his deal into some sort of extension with Denver for some cap space this year, which would mean the agent would get paid again. Makes sense.

I would strongly think about it. It would give us a proven LT and then we could wheel and deal to get the rest of our guys needed in the draft. It would suck not having a first rounder this year, especially since it isnmt often we are this close to the middle of the first round. But if we could land him, I think I would do it. I wonder if they try to push Os back on us to make thr deal. Lol
