Season finale -Broncos vs Raiders

  1. I hear from cowboys fans all the time about Romo and my response is that we don't have $20 million in cap space to take on an aging, immobile QB who can't stay healthy. With a patchwork, porous offensive line, it would be a very poor decision.

  2. As far as Kubiak retiring, it wouldn't be the worst thing to happen, but who do you bring in? Keeping Wade is a priority IMO, regardless of who we bring in. Dennison shouldn't even get consideration. He has been passed over twice, and after seeing his play calling this season, I see why. I don't want an old retread coach like Fox, and I don't want another McD type guy that thinks his shot doesn't stink. So where do we go? Sean Peyton perhaps? Not really a retread, but is a solid coach. No to Jeff Fisher. Any other ideas?

I would like to see him stay, but a very large majority of the staff needs to go. Dennison can stay if he wants to coach the offensive line. He is pretty good at that from his days learning under Alex Gibbs.

    1. Offensive staff that is. ST's coordinator can go too. They were terrible with the damn penalties. I can't recall too many kick returns we didnt have a penalty on, taking away any decent field position we may have had.

  3. Doesn't look like I'll be able to see the last game of the year. We are in rural Illinois at my 86 years old father in laws and the rabbit ears don't get a CBS station. No internet or wifi either.

    1. May be a good thing if we keep playing like we have the past several weeks.

    2. Me either. Unless I go to the bar.

  4. One thing I have been thinking a lot about is the draft. We have a ton of picks because of the comp picks. I wonder if this is the year where we may end up making a huge splash in the draft to move up and get a big name. Or perhaps we make several draft day trades to move up and get guys we need.

I suspect we will be letting quite a few free agents walk, and I am sure we will replace several of them with other free agents.

OLine is clearly the biggest priority. Paradis was an iron man, not missing a snap despite playing on two bad hips which will both require surgery following this week. We may need to start planning for a replacement for him considering this is his second year and already needs surgery on both hips.

We also need a big run stuffing LB or DT/DE. Probably two LB's.

We may need to look at a big time back up for Wolfe. Two neck injuries means he may be closer to retirement or blowing himself around in a wheelchair than he is to returning to a pro bowl caliber player.

A TE who can catch. We resigned Virgil Green and he was a complete disappointment. They say his strength is blocking, but clearly that wasn't the case based on the fact that our QB was either on the run all the time or on their back. Cut him and move on. Doesn't appear Heurman is worth the draft pick we used on him. He had a few big catches late in the season, but still hasn't done anything. Darby played pretty well and he will probably be our starting TE next year. I like him so far.

WR will be a high priority as well. Norwood should be released as soon as the game clock hits 0:00 tomorrow. Lattimer has been another waste of a high draft pick. Fowler may have caught Manning's last pass ever, but he had several key drops in losses that could have potentially turned into wins had he held on. He can go. Jordan Taylor I like. We need a few WR's who can handle return duties adequately and be a 4th and 5th WR. Taylor should be #3 unless we find someone better.

RB- not sure we have our guy. Bibbs was coming on before he got hurt. Booker fumbles and seems to wear down easily, especially considering we ran the ball only about thirty times the past five weeks combined. Forsett was better, but not sure why we didn't try to push him in there more. Thompson is still a big question mark. CJ can't seem to stay on the field and has been mostly ineffective when he is. Comes up big late in games after we have worn the defense down. maybe he is our change of pace back and we need to find a new starter. Maybe that is Forsett with a better line. How we handle the line will determine a lot of how next season goes.

QB. Still not sure if we have our guy yet or not. Both are still young and both still have a long way to go. If the line was better, one of them may or may not have shown they are the guy of the future. TS had some flashes of greatness, but more often than not holds the ball way too long. He also had to have the most dropped potential INT's dropped in the league. I think he had about 5 in the second game against SD.

Lynch looked good in his first action, but looked dismal in his two subsequent showings. Again, the line may have beena big part of that.

In short, we have some major issues, but we still have a great defense and having even an average oline will result in a significant offensive improvement.

    1. Do we pick up Okung's option? Was he so bad because the guy next to him sucked so he had to try to take on more than he could handle, or is he just not very good? Not sure.

      Delete
    2. I won't for the money he was getting, cut him and try to bring him back on a cheaper deal.

      Delete
  5. Someone posted about Tyrod Taylor on the old post. Sounds like he may be locked in with the Bills. He has a clause in his contract that if he cannot pass a physical by the end of the league year. Something like $30 million of his contract remaining becomes gauranteed. Something crazy like that. He apparently has a shoulder injury that may cause him to fail his year end physical, with or without surgery.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also a groin injury, I think that could be him and his agent angling for the money. He could be let go with an injury settlement maybe, otherwise he would be traded but we don't want that contract.

      Delete
  6. Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke to be fired in SF. Not a surprise. McCoy expected to also be fired after tomorrow. Another no brainer. That makes four or five coaches so far. Wonder if there will be any shockers. I am willing to bet Fox gets canned in Chicago. Marvin Lewis may finally be done in Cincy. Bowles may be done in NY. Arians may be done in Arizona. Peyton may be done in New Orleans.

    1. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of them as HC, a few would be good OCs.

    2. IMO, we don't want Okung at 9M/yr. which is what I feel he will want on a new deal. I say we move up in the draft to get the rookie we want for LT. Rework Stevenson's deal because I think his failures are mostly because of our terrible RG play. That and never having a TE help him out over there. Here's what I would like to see, rookie LT (1st rounder), LG Sambrailo, C Paradis, RG I don't know yet, RT Stevenson.

  8. Yep looking like Kubiak may be done after today. I saw that about Vance Joseph as well. Not sure how I feel about him, but he did a lot for Tannehill in Miami. Made him look good after several years of being terrible. Maybe that is more Gase though than it was him. Not really sure who is running the offense there.

  11. As much as I hate Oakland, had to feel bad for them losing Carr going into the playoffs. Would have rather seen them go farther than KC. I think I hate KC more at this point. But I certainly won't feel bad about playing spoiler today and having a winning record to finish the season.

  14. Forgot in my post last night about needs that we will probably have Walker coming back from IR next year if we keep him.

  15. I have to wonder if Elway is a bit relieved at some level that Kubiak is hanging it up. Keeps him from having to consider firing a good friend.

    1. Absolutely. There was a lot of fans calling for Kubes head. I am sure this has been known between him and Elway for quite some time. Probably after he was hospitalized.

    2. Maybe elway pushed him a little too? Like 'come on mate, your health isn't great'

      Delete
    3. I dont think he would have done that so quickly after winning a SB. It is Elway's job to give him players and Elway gave him a crappy line. Can't pin that on Kubiak.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think Raymond can be our return guy going forward, he seems to know what he is doing. Getting some pressure on the qb too. Gotsis has been getting upfield nice.

  51. Mike Klis of the Post is suggesting Denver is targeting Shanahan to replace Kubiak. Kyle that is. Not Mike.

  52. 9-7. First team out of playoffs. Draft pick #20.

  53. It's being rumored that some of the Broncos D players are saying they believe Wade may retire after this season. Could be, the sideline hit he took may have him concerned as to whether he should be on the field. Also with a HC-ing change looming (Wade won't be considered IMO), he may not be up to another go around.

I love Wade and I know this won't be taken well, but he does have a history of starting hot in his first season with a new team and then trailing off until he's fired. That's been the pattern, early smoke and mirrors without much lasting power. Of course patterns are always remade. I wouldn't be unhappy if he stays, he deserves that much - and more! But if he decides to hang em up, I'm okay with that too. Big changes coming and we are lucky to have one of the leagues top GMs to navigate the waters ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If it is someone young and inexperienced as a HC like Shanahan I could see most of the staff like wade come back. But a more experienced coach would clean house.

I for one would like wade to stay. Allen and del rio both had good stints with our d but wade made it next level.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wade has the ability to use guys to their strengths and put them in a position to be effective. I truly believe that Elway will basically tell the next HC he is keeping Wade, as long as Wade wants to come back. He has already told Wade he has a job in denver as long as he wants it. He just has that ability to do well. I think most places he has been haven't had the talent we are used to. Elway will always have top talent coming in and we have a lot of young guys on defense to comtinue to build around. Most are signed for another 3-4 years, so we should be solid at least diring that time period and hopefully beyond.

      Delete
  55. Zaire Anderson released from hospital. Thank God!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I read that about Wade too. He only lasts a few years at each stop until his way of coaching has no effect anymore.
My guess is Shanahan will be our HC and won't make a whole lot of changes. Kubes may even stay and be that help for Elway someone talked about a while back.
If Vance Joseph is our guy, which is just a guess by a media person right now,he would want a whole new beginning, including Wade out.

Adam Schefter reports the 49ers have requested an interview with Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio for their open general manager position.

The 49ers also requested an interview with Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, so they may be looking for a package deal which could also include a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.

  58. I think Kubiak will eventually be back in our front office at some point, but I expect him to take a few years away.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Broncos have officially requested to speak with Kyle Shanahan.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I wish kubes all the best. A few months rest and then he can help us with draft work :P

Looks like it will be either Kyle or Vance. I like Kyle because we need offense help bad and he would probably keep wade. Like you said above Vance may want to put his own stamp on the defense. Both or on playoff teams though so may have to wait a little while.

    ReplyDelete
  61. So Brent/Bert/Beavis is starting for Houston, Siemian is going under the knife and the Broncos get a two week jump on most of the league to learn a new system when they hire our new head coach. That pretty much sums up Bronco news so far for 1/3/2017??

    ReplyDelete
  62. Who do you guys like so far in the coaching search?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think I like the Lynn/Bradley package. Continue to compete every year with a strong Defense and run game.

There are a couple of STs coaches being mentioned too. Toub and Fassel.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think I like Sean Peyton for head coach, if he turns out to be an option. The experience with Mcworthless has probably soured my desire for a young head coach forever. Kyle Shanahan is intriguing, but would he have the same demand for full control like his father did? Nuts don't tend to fall too far from the tree! I could see he and Elway butting heads if he does.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Peyton will cost us some draft picks.

I heard Elway and the old man Shanahan aren't all that close. Maybe that translates down to young Shanahan wanting the job under Elway. For some reason I think he will take the Rams job.

  67. Kyle Shanahan has publicly said he is very interested in the Denver job. I would assume that if he had his pick between the Rams, 9ers, Jags and Broncos, it would come down to the Jags and Broncos, as they both have the most talent. Between those two, you are likely to have more job security in Denver because you have a greater chance of winning and have an organization that is dedicated to winning every year. All three of those other jobs arent likely to be a huge sucess and therefore will come with a short leash. If Elway likes him, he will be our next coach.

  70. I think Kyle Shanny gets it if he wants it. As for being a nut off dad's tree, I don't know. I doubt any of us would say we are the clones of our fathers and what they did is who we are. I don't know what the relationship is with JE and MIke, I've read they made up or at least are on friendly terms (I think they've golfed together). Kyle may want to bring dad in ac OC, which I would be fine with.

As for age, Kyle just turned 38 a few weeks ago. As for experience, he's held several coaching positions and has been the OC for 4 teams, Houston (under Kubes 2008, 3rd ranked offense and 2009, 4th ranked offense, #1 passing), Washington (with dad Mike, 2010, 18th ranked, 2011 16th ranked, 2012 5th ranked, 2019 9th ranked), Cleveland where he quit because he refused to start Manziel (26th ranked) and currently with Atlanta (2015 7th ranked and 2016, 2nd ranked).

The man knows offense, knows Kubes system and the WCO inside and out. He has taken the Siefert WCO 1, that evolved to dad's WCO 2 and transformed it to WCO 3 under Kyle, the newest and most innovative version. The pieces for it are already here, the players and coaches won't be starting from square one and Kyle molds the WCO to fit the existing personnel.

Kyle doesn't rely on the old style ZBS, he moves the QB out of the pocket, goes for short to mid range passes with more bombs than Kube's style and isn't so run dependent.

I think he's the best fit for what we have, he'll work well with both TS and PL (He was a QBs coach, WRs coach and Quality Controll Coordinator before being OC). In his words "I studied every potential Xs and Os play and issue possible. I spent my whole life working on that. My goal was that any question a player could have about anything on the field, I'd be able to answer it." If we can land him, I think he'd be just what we need to jump start our O. He's never been a HC, but neither has Joseph, Toub. Lynn (who will stay in Buff), or Cooter.

Payton would be good but he will come at a high price. McCoy would be decent but like Payton, his Ds are terrible. McD, oh hell no, Patricia I think goes to SF and drags some FO guys with him in a package deal (maybe Grappolo too), Bevell in Seattle has the same problem on O that Dennison had (although he worked well with Wilson) and the others are OC-Ds who would remake the entire staff (Elway has stated he would like to retain as much of the current staff as possible).

Oh, there's also some talk of Linehan from Dallas (no HC experience either) coming in with Romo - uhh, no... Of course JE will probably fake us all out and come up with someone like Shaw from Stanford. We shall see...

  71. One last thing, Kyle was brought up in Denver. He was a ball boy while Elway played, their relationship goes back many, many years. The bad taste of dad getting canned has probably gone long ago and JE didn't fire Shanny, Pat did. Shanny coming to Denver was mostly on JE's demands. Kyle and his dad between them have been fired from several teams since Denver so I'm sure Kyle understands it's part of the NFL. I don't think the firing will affect Kyle's decision one bit, in fact, because of his history in Denver, I see it as a major plus.

    ReplyDelete
  72. There is a report that Joseph is the leader and is his job to lose. I don't think that is the case. In fact, like I said last night and like B1st alluded to, I think Shanahan is the favorite and should be. He brings what we need, offense. Unless one of these other guys talks a good game and brings a great staffing plan along with him to the interview, I expect Saturday Shanahan to be named our HC following his interview.

    1. Barring a complete disaster of an interview of course.

  73. The interviews are happening now but choices won't be made yet. Most of the options are still in the playoffs.

1st, you're supposed to say the opposite of what you want, remember. Now Kyle will choose somewhere else for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  74. So, I have to admit, I like the sound of what 1st was talking about Shanahan and his WC3 with the Rollouts and the moving pocket a whole lot more than getting Lynn and continuing our desire for a run game. I mean, I was all for the run first approach when Kubes came in, but we never got it going because of play calling. We don't have the personnel to go ground and pound approach Lynn would probably want. Plus why fix what ain't broke on D by going to Bradley before Wade is done. Buffalo is perfect spot for them.

Shanny Jr. is perfect for us. We have two top WRs we need to use more. Young QBs that need more coaching. An awesome D and DC in place. I just hope he is not to good of friends with Dennison. He is not an OC, IMO. OL coach, maybe.

    1. I had been asking all season why we weren't rolling the QB out more to help keep pressure off them and to spread the defense out more. We did that a lot with Plummer and TS sort of reminds me of him. We did it a few times when the offense was struggling and it seemed to work well.

      I hope Elway likes him.

Joseph won't be able to interview until Sunday at the earliest, and if Elway likes Shanahan on saturday it might not matter.

  75. If Dennison gets demoted back to OL and Barrone back to TEs, do you think they stay?

  76. Who would Kyle bring with him? I would guess Bobby Turner might come along back to Denver. I would also guess he would want to take the Lauer brothers, who have been with him all over the place. Maybe Joel Collier.

    1. Turner would probably only be able to come along if it is a promotional position. Teams generally don't let guys leave for lateral positions. I would love to see him come back. He is the best RB's coach hands down.

    2. He left as our RB coach to be Wash RB coach.

  77. As you can see I have to much time on my hands today. Looking at draft.

They have said that with the underclassmen who have declared, most teams have over 40 players with a 1st round grade. However, it is weak on top OTs. Even though a bunch of teams need OL help bad, Cam Robinson, the top LT, could fall out of the top 10 picks. Since it has been estimated we will have two comps coming in the 3rd round, should we use our 1st and 3rd to move up about 5 spots for him if he's still there or wait, pick at 20, and then use the #51&#82 to trade up for one of the guys we have with a 1st round grade at the top part of round 2? I think the second option sounds more like what JE will do.

    2. Realistically, I don't see big changes being made to our o-line, maybe a L/RT and G, probably a new line coach (bye-Barone). Like you said, draft pickings are slim and FAs will be hard/expensive to get. Besides, It would be extremely rare to find a start-ready lineman in the draft, even the best take 1-3 years to fully develop.. Which means we will keep some guys we aren't that high on and hope coaching, a new impact player or two and new/adjusted blocking scheme will make the whole line more serviceable. IMO, JE will pull no punches to get it done. If our o-line can move into the top half, it will be a great improvement.

  78. ESPN has an article out listing the statistical leaders for 2016 season. Not real consistent with top number of finishers (some only list top 2 some have top 5) Only time Broncos are mentioned is Miller at number 2 in sacks.

  79. Reposrts are suggesting that Shanhan wants the job here and it is tops on his list, as it should be. I'm sure it is toos on everyone's list of the choices available. Why wouldn't it be?

  80. I agree, the changes made to the OL probably will not be as drastic as one would like to think would happen to a group that performed so badly as a unit last year. Like we said earlier, the OL was revamped last year. Sure some seemed like dumb moves half way through the year. Our offense could not convert 3rd and 1s. Many times we would be 3rd and 6 because someone jumped. Other times we just got our collective asses handed to us. Anyway, old news. I don't think any are FAs, so it would be a choice to walk away from them and leave a huge whole that HAS to be filled. That's not the way smart teams operate. Smart teams have guys ready to fill holes created by FAS that got more money on the market than what we feel they're worth. That is what Elway has done. That is why he is successful as a GM. He understands the value of draft picks as depth. He is getting comp picks every year and I love it. Our holes will be guys who leave because they got more money elsewhere that what we want to pay them. That could be some of the OL if we feel they should take a cut and they won't. The trick is anticipating years in advance where we'll need depth for future FAs.

Wow! That got log winded, sorry.
Back to OL. I see a high a fairly high draft pick at OT and at OG. Possibly OC too. Not necessarily plug in/have to be starters now guys though. If they win the job, great. It would not be hard to beat out half of our starters. The draft prospects get hyped to much as saviors right now though. We don't need saving. We were 9-7 and just barely missed the playoffs. We are not broken. IMO, we are a a couple key things short of another SB winning team(we all knew we were not that this year). Mostly our missing keys are the same stuff we get beat by. A mobile QB, a TE that's a threat down the seam, and some speed on offense. Mobile QB, check. If we use them correctly. TE, possible check. Derby and Huey started to look good toward the end. Speed, NO. Well, we have Sanders, but I don't think he should be a return guy or the end around, quick screen guy. We need Christian McCaffery.

  81. Hole not whole. Other screw ups too. Sorry.

  82. Bigger than the OL ? is whether or not we think our FAs are worth to us what they could get on the open market. Main ones being Ware, Williams and Webster. The way I see Elway handling it is to let them shop themselves and if they stay they stay. If not, we get comp picks next year. I think Ware will stay one more year. I think Webster will receive little interest and stay. If he leaves, maybe we sign Bruton back. Williams should get interest and truthfully I feel we should let him walk. That puts NT as a big hole to fill, if we do. Oh, another FA, another "W" haha, Walker. DE would be hole then too. I think it is anyway, even if he stays.

As far as FAS we may look at, I think we are to the point Elway was striving for of not having to buy the big name. Has been at that point a year or two already. Our FAs will be guys that are still good but got trashed by the other team for unfortunate circumstances. They will be guys that got cut so they don't mess up us getting comp picks. Maybe super Mario, who knows. Maybe, Tyrod. Maybe, Matt Kahil.

    1. Ware finally got his back surgery done. When I was younger, I had a couple of discs removed. Took a while to heal but the pain was gone immediately. The proccedures are much quicker and simplified these days so I would expect that DW comes back with some new life in 2017 - if he returns. Having the 24/7 pain gone is a BIG difference... you can take my word on that. Could mean a couple of more years with DW. The only problem I see is JE may decide it's time to start the younger guys and let them reach their full potential.

    2. That's good news for him then. I'm not sure if he signs a team friendly deal or not to stay. As I talked about earlier, Elway seems to value comp picks a lot. Letting FAs walk has been part for him in years past. Ware may be an exception though and sign with us for rotational OLB pay just to stick with Von. Maybe it is time for Elway to go younger like you said. That is one that will be tough to decide on.

  83. I really wonder what impact new offensive coaches will have on our line play and run game. QB situation should be better with both guys having more experience. Our best hope might be that the young guys (McGovern, Ferentz) excel in their 2nd year. That might be a pipe dream though because if they were anywhere close you'd think they would have gotten a shot this year.

    1. Hopefully we get the right coaches and the impact is big.

    2. Coaches will help. Cure? Probably not. These are professional athletes, they don't listen to coaching all that much. Play calling. Now that will help!

Ferentz will have tough time making team I think. At least I hope. He's undersized. Dad is a coach though.

    3. I haven't really watched Atlanta's Oline. Does Kyle use the same style olinemen as the traditional ZBS, or does he use bigger linemen? If he does, then it won't matter because we'll be looking for replacements anyway.

  84. Just remembered, comp picks can be traded this year!

  86. It was actually a very good season for Oakland and was a sad ending, losing their QB seemingly knocked all the wind out of their sails. That being said, seeing a hated division rival go down in flames does my heart good.

  87. It will be interesting to see if Miami somehow beats Pittsburgh tomorrow if Elway cancels the interview with Vance. I don't see him wanting to wait another week or possibly longer just to interview one guy. I am hoping he isn't our coach. I want Wade to stay. We haven't had a great defense in decades and he has brought it back. Shanahan would likely keep him. If Vance doesn't get interviewed, we'll have to find someone to interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Elway shot himself in the foot saying nobody on the existing staff is being considered. So if he would interview Studesville, it would clearly look like a snub interview.

Not sure I'm real high on a ST's coach running the team. Especially someone from a division rival. Although he would bring a lot of insider info from KC.

    1. I think we interview Joseph whether MIA wins or loses - without waiting. The only difference is if MIA wins, we go there for the interview, if they lose, he comes to Denver.

    2. Per Mike Klis;
"The Dolphins are playing a first-round playoff game this Sunday at Pittsburgh, so the Broncos have to wait until next week to interview Joseph. If the Dolphins beat Pittsburgh, the Broncos’ contingent would have to interview Joseph in Miami. If the Dolphins lose, the Broncos can bring Joseph to Denver for the interview."

    3. I didn't think we could interview him until he was done in the playoffs, or if they madenit to the SB then the week off between the championship game and SB. Things must have changed.

    4. And for the record Klis is a dbag. He thinks the best idea is to hire Toub.

We'd be going from Tubes to Toub.

    5. I didn't read that Klis wants Toub, although I did read that Kizla wants him. I just don't get the love for Toub, he a ST coach and never been a HC just like the other 2. I'm rooting for Shanny #1 and Joseph #2. Who either of them wants to fill the assistant positions and which scheme they plan to use will be the determining factors IMO. I think it's tomorrow (Monday, their day off) for the window to interview Joseph so we should know soon. Oh and, loved seeing OAK get beat by our reject Bart. Fucking Seachickens paid the refs off - DET got screwed like a $2 whore... I hope they get stomped by whoever they play next.

    6. That's always the case at Sea. Refs are the real 12th man for them.

    7. We don't want just a single Toub. The plural Tube was bad enough.
